SMU Prediction: What’s Going To Happen

Sonny Dykes is in the right job and the right spot to win and win big. He’s got the quarterback, and despite the loss of the team’s top two receivers, he’s got the targets for his timing/midrange passing attack to fly.

It’ll be another big offensive season, but the defense will be a little bit better, too. Now, with all of the attacking and all of the pressure will come more production. As long as the starting 11 on D is healthy, there will be just enough of an improvement to push harder for the West title.

With all of the big boys in the conference at home, there’s no excuse not to be close. But the Mustangs will come up just short on the way to another bowl appearance – which they’ll actually show up to this time after losing to Louisiana Tech 51-10 in the Frisco.

Guessing The Preseason Regular Season Win Total Will Be Set At … 6.5

Even after winning seven regular season games, the early bar will a bit lower considering the coaching change, the health concerns in a few key spots, and with a schedule that’s nasty early, but eases up late.

The positive? Navy, Houston, and Memphis all have to come to Dallas, and while there’s a road date against UCF from the East, going to Tulane, UConn and Tulsa shouldn’t be that bad.

They have to beat North Texas to realistically push for seven wins, but with TCU, at Michigan, Navy and at UCF in the first half of the season, they’ll have to come up with an upset somewhere.

They’ll go bowling, but it’ll happen with six wins.
