What You Need To Know About The San Diego State Defense

– After leading the Mountain West and finishing as the 11th-best in the country, the defense should once again be the San Diego State defense. Parker Baldwin and Tariq Thompson will be among the league’s two best safeties, and Ron Smith is growing into a top corner, but Kameron Kelly on the other side and safety Trey Lomax will be missed.

– Two starters are gone off of a front three that needs to get into the backfield a bit more. Chibu Onyeukwu is a veteran on one end, and Noble Hall is a good producer with three years in the mix, but a stud has to emerge at tackle. The hope is for a few JUCO transfers and new guys to step up fast – there isn’t a whole lot of bulk beef.

Biggest Key To The San Diego State Defense

It would be nice if there was more of a pass rush. The defense did just fine without getting into the backfield on a regular basis – you’re doing something right if you’re only allowing 315 yards and 20 points per game – but there wasn’t anything happening behind the line.

The 2015 defense registered 37 sacks, and the 2016 D came up with 38. Last year’s defense? Just 23 sacks, and 19 of them came in five games. There weren’t enough plays behind the line in general, with just 58 tackles for loss – 18 fewer than in 2016.
