Preview 2018: North Carolina Tar Heels. Win Now, Or Else

What You Need To Know About The North Carolina Offense

– The rebuilding year on offense wasn’t a whole lot of fun. The Tar Heels suffered a massive midseason power outage, failing to hit the 20 point mark during a six-game ACC stretch. But here’s the bigger problem – there has to be another rebuild this year, too.

It’s not like the Tar Heels went to a youth movement, with rough results after going with a mish-mosh of mediocre veterans and green skill players. No matter how this is all put together this time around, averaging 26 points and 370 yards per game won’t cut it.

The madly inefficient passing game still needs work. Leading receiver Anthony Ratliff-Williams is back, but Austin Proehl and Jordan Cunningham – two of the top three receivers – are gone.

There’s still a battle for the quarterback job, with Nathan Elliott – the star over the final few weeks – bailing with Chazz Surratt, needing one of them to step up and dominate in practices. Surratt is the more talented option with better passing skills, but Elliott is a fun baller who makes things happen.

– And here’s the problem with the way last year went for the offense. The line loses four starters. There wasn’t enough happening for the ground game, and the pass protection was iffy.

Jordon Brown and Michael Carter are both smallish, quick backs who can produce when given room to move. Carter was the more effective runner last year, Brown the better receiver, and there’s more young talent coming to help them out.

Biggest Key To The North Carolina Offense

Enough with the turnovers. Coming up with more third down conversions is a must after hitting on just 31% of their tries, and the offense has to be far better at controlling the clock – the two things tie together. But the turnovers were crushing, giving up two or more in seven games – losing all seven. In the three wins? None. Not a single giveaway.

The 22 on the year were the most since 2014 and the second-most in the ACC. With a mediocre defense as part of the mix again, the offense can’t keep putting the team in a hole.
