You obviously don’t get better by losing Lamar Jackson, but not having Superman to rely on anymore might just make everyone else step up and shine.

There are way too many question marks on both sides of the ball – like the running back situation on offense, and the line on defense – to think this could be a special type of ACC championship season, but there’s enough talent in place to push for at least eight wins again.

Jawon Pass will be terrific at quarterback – even if he’s not Jackson – and the receiving corps will be a force with a little time. As long as the defense can start to generate more pressure and come up with a few more key stops, at the very least, the program shouldn’t take a major step back. However …

Guessing The Preseason Regular Season Win Total Will Be Set At … 7.5

Start with losses to the two best teams in college football – Alabama and Clemson – away from Papa John’s, and then it’s up to handling the home dates.

If the Cardinals are strong, they should love the road schedule against Virginia, Boston College and Syracuse. There’s no Miami or Virginia Tech from the Coastal, and Georgia Tech, NC State, and Florida State are at home.

However, out of the ten games outside of the dates with the Crimson Tide and Tigers, the can only lose two to avoid the mediocre seven-win mark.

The Cardinals won’t be good enough to take down all of their home games to do that. Seven is about right, but Petrino has just one season of fewer than eight wins in his 13 years. It might take a bowl victory to do that this time.
