2018 ACC Early Win Totals Released: Where's The Value?

It’s still early, but the 2018 win totals for the ACC were released. What are they, what are the early predictions, and where’s the value?

Much like the early Week 1 game predictions, here’s how this annual exercise works. First, the May prediction of what the ACC win totals should be – without looking at where the line is set – and then the real line from the South Point Hotel & Casino will be added.

Where’s the possible value? Where are the lines likely to be off?

Of course, this can and will change by the time this is done for real in August. But for now …

Boston College Eagles

Will QB Anthony Brown be ready for the season? If his knee isn’t okay, BC should still be fine early on, but his availability is the difference. Even so, the Eagles will beat UMass, Holy Cross, and most likely, Temple. They’ll be more than good enough to come up with three more wins, even with a brutal second half stretch.

Clemson Tigers

If this isn’t the best team in college football, it’ll be ranked second in all of the rankings – where’s the loss going to come from? At Florida State? At Georgia Tech? At home against South Carolina, or at Texas A&M? There should be one letdown along the way to lose once, but it’ll take a massive upset to drop two games.

Florida State Seminoles

Don’t totally buy in that the Willie Taggart will rock right out of the gate. There are still question marks on the O line, quarterback, and with some rebuilding to do, but the home schedule is good enough to get to six wins without too much of a problem, but compared to last offseason – when the Noles were looking to push for a College Football Playoff spot – it’ll take a lot to push for ten wins.

Louisville Cardinals

It’s not a bad schedule, and even without Lamar Jackson, this isn’t a bad team. Assume losses to Alabama and Clemson, but Florida State, Georgia Tech and NC State have to come to Papa John’s. Getting to a bowl game won’t be a problem, but the Cardinals won’t push Clemson for the Atlantic.

NC State Wolfpack

There might be a slew of key losses on the offensive side, but the defense will still be great – despite the loss of Bradley Chubb – and QB Ryan Finley returns. Assume JMU, Georgia State and Virginia are wins, beating Boston College at home and Marshall on the road will be a must, with four road games in the final six.

Syracuse Orange

As some point, the Orange program will turn under Dino Babers. With the offense strong enough to put up big numbers again, there will be a decent early base of three wins against Western Michigan, Wagner and UConn, but it’ll be a fight to get to six wins. They’ll be underdogs against everyone else.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

As good as the Demon Deacons have been over the last two seasons – winning 15 games under Dave Clawson – there still aren’t sure-thing wins against some of the better teams. However, if they beat Tulane, Towson and Boston College for a 3-9 start, they should easily get to six wins with home games against Rice, Syracuse and Pitt along the way.
