Quarterback Battle Updates: Notre Dame, Nebraska, Texas, UCLA, Baylor

The best quarterback on the field was Josh Rosen, but he was signing autographs instead of getting ready for his senior season.

Chip Kelly is still waiting for his quarterback.

The spring game – a modified scrimmage with only a half being played – wasn’t exactly high-octane fun, but that’s coming. This appeared to be just a showcase to prove that, yeah, Kelly really is the team’s head coach. When it comes to finding out who’ll be under center against Cincinnati to kick things off, everyone will have to be patient.

The likely two top guys on the depth chart – Michigan transfer Wilton Speight, and star recruit Dorian Thompson-Robinson – aren’t there yet.

Austin Burton is a great fit for what Kelly wants to do – he’s got the speed and athleticism – and was the best quarterback during the spring scrimmage. But if he’s seeing any meaningful moments this season, there’s a problem.

The No. 3 man at the moment completed 6-of-8 throws for 110 yards and a score. The No. 1 guy didn’t do so much.

It’s up to Devon Modster to take the job by the horns now with a wide open race coming up in a few months, and he wasn’t consistent enough. There was a pick, too many misfires, and a dropped snap that ended the scrimmage.

Matt Lynch would almost certainly be the No. 2 guy if the season started right now, and he showed off a little bit with a nice throw for a touchdown to Theo Howard. However, he threw an interception and was just okay, not sharp enough to make a big push.

Just wait. The main men – and the offense – will show up soon.

Best Guess On Fall Depth Chart: 1) Speight, 2) Modster, 3) Lynch, 4) (redshirt) Thompson-Robinson
