The announced attendance was over 65,000, but that might have been cooking up the numbers a bit, and head coach Jeremy Pruitt noticed.

He praised the Vol fans who did show up, and he hammered on the ones who didn’t.

He liked the way some of his guys played, but ripped on those who “flat-out quit.”

But for those who did come see the game, they watched Jarrett Guarantano do almost everything he needed to – even if it took a little while to warm up. Once he settled in, he was terrific.

Stanford grad transfer Keller Chryst is coming in this fall, and it was up to Guarantano and others to establish himself as the man to beat. This had to be when he became the 1 on the depth chart.

He completed 15-of-27 passes for 226 yards and two scores, spreading the ball around well and got the offense moving. Decisive, accurate, and productive, the Vols generated actual offensive production.

After last year, who cares if it came in a light scrimmage?

Will McBride wasn’t even given a chance – he was with the second-teamers. He fought the good fight, but he only threw for 71 yards and a score with two picks on a 6-of-18 day.

So, did Guarantano cement the job? Hardly. Remember, there’s a reason Chryst is transferring from the Cardinal – he wasn’t all that great. It’ll be a fight to the finish before the opener against West Virginia, but …

Best Guess On Fall Depth Chart: 1) Guarantano, 2) Chryst, 3) McBride
