Daily Five: Every Power Five Team's Sandwich & Letdown Games

Big 12 Sandwich/Letdown Games

The dangerous games in between bigger games the teams have to get up for.

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Sept. 15 vs. Duke

There’s no letdown game for a team that won one game, but it’ll get up for the trip to UTSA after losing to the Roadrunners last year, and the must-win Big 12 opener against Kansas is after hosting the Blue Devils.

Iowa State

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Sept. 22 vs. Akron

Head coach Matt Campbell – the former Toledo head man – should know how dangerous MAC teams can be. Akron will have the defense to be a problem for a Cyclone team coming off the Iowa and Oklahoma games and with trips to TCU and Oklahoma State to follow.

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Sept. 1 vs. Nicholls State

There’s no such thing as a sandwich or letdown game for Kansas, so it gets the honor of the one possible downer game coming in the opener to the paycheck/cupcake team.

Kansas State

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Sept. 15 vs. UTSA

The Roadrunners might not have the defense of last year, but they’re still going to be dangerous enough to pull this off with K-State coming off the Mississippi State game and with the Big 12 opener at West Virginia to follow.

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Sept. 29 vs. Baylor

There isn’t a sandwich game between two powers, but with the Texas game to follow, and coming off a start against FAU, UCLA, at Iowa State, and against the Army option, OU will see Baylor as the layup.

Oklahoma State

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Nov. 3 at Baylor

Go ahead and find the Oklahoma State fan who isn’t assuming an automatic win over the Bears. This is in between the showdown against Texas and with the Bedlam date at Oklahoma to follow.

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Sept. 29 vs. Iowa State

This is more of a letdown game than a sandwich date – with Texas Tech to follow. The Horned Frogs have to host Ohio State and Texas before getting the Cyclones.
– Spring Analysis | Schedule Breakdown

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Sept. 29 at Kansas State

It’ll be an important game since it’s one of the few true road games over the first half of the schedule, but it’s coming after playing USC and TCU, and with Oklahoma the week after.

Texas Tech

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Oct 20 vs. Kansas

Don’t … biff … the Kansas game. The Red Raiders deal with a trip to TCU the week before, and go back on the road to face Iowa State the week after, and with Oklahoma and Texas to follow.
– Spring Analysis | Schedule Breakdown

West Virginia

Sandwich/Letdown Game: Oct. 25 vs. Baylor

It’s sandwiched between road dates at Iowa State and Texas – but with a week off after facing the Cyclones – but this is more about not looking ahead. The November right after this? At Texas, TCU, at Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma.
