All You Really Need To Know About Michigan
Scorching hot, the Wolverines rolled through the late part of the regular season, ripped through the Big Ten Tournament on the way to the championship, and took advantage of all the breaks thanks to the upsets in the West Region to get a shot at their first national title since 1989.
Ugly early, they struggled from the field against Loyola, turned up the defense, and that was that. Just when it looked like the Ramblers were about to pull off the impossible, the D forced the takeaways.
Michigan forced 17 turnovers and held Loyola to 1-of-10 from three. The Wolverines didn’t do anything crazy other than do what they’ve done throughout the tournament and the back half of the season – crank up the defense, and rely on Mo Wagner to come through, putting up 24 points and 15 rebounds.
Free throws continue to be an issue, and the team is just okay on the boards, but only Virginia forced more mistakes, and the only team playing with more confidence might just be Villanova.
All You Really Need To Know About Villanova
It’s been an easy ride for the Wildcats, with no drama, nothing to worry about, and blowout win after blowout win.
There hasn’t been a need any any one shining moment when it keeps winning by double digits.
The best offense in college basketball went stupid-good from three against Kansas, making 18-of-40 from three and 55% from the field in the 95-79 win.
The Jayhawks blinked, and it was over.
No. 1 in the nation from three – at least in terms of the most made – and first in scoring, the Wildcats should be able to simply outbomb Michigan. But they can hit from the free throw line, too. However …
What’s Going To Happen
The big key? Villanova just doesn’t turn the ball over.
The Michigan defense might have the intensity and talent, but the offense doesn’t quite have the firepower. The O needs the D to generate points, and the Wildcats just won’t let that happen.
However, Michigan will hang around for a half, and might even be up at the break, and then around the midway point in the second half, the Villanova run will come, and the Wolverines won’t have an answer. The Wildcats will pull away by hitting their free throws.
