What You Need To Know About The Louisiana Tech Defense

– Louisiana Tech hasn’t exactly been know for its defense under Skip Holtz, but this group should be terrific. The D allowed 386 yards and 25 points per game last season, but it came up with 28 takeaways despite a mediocre pass rush. This year, expect more big things happening behind the line, an even stronger season from the secondary, and a great run from the linebacking corps.

– Dae’Von Washington is a smallish 5-11, 215-pound linebacker, but the guy can hit. Start with the return of the team’s leading tackler, expect big things from star JUCO transfer Connor Taylor, and with Brandon Durman back after missing half of last year, the Tech linebackers will shine.

– There’s talent up front and in the back, too. Jaylon Ferguson will be among the best pass rushing ends in Conference USA, and the 6-2, 280-pound Jordan Bradford is a solid presence on the inside. Now the line has to get into the backfield more for a D that came up with just 24 sacks and 63 tackles for loss.

Ball-hawker Amik Robertson is a big-time talent at one corner spot, and now the safeties have to fill into the 4-2-5 alignment. Darryl Lewis will be one of the team’s top tacklers again after coming up with 45 stops.

Biggest Key To The Louisiana Tech Defense

Where’s the pressure into the backfield? It didn’t matter all that much overall for a defense that came up with a nice season, but after cranking up 88 tackles for loss two years ago – and getting almost all of the production back – the Bulldogs struggled to get up to 63 last season.

The big plays started to kick in late in the year – with eight tackles for loss in the good win over UTSA and eight more in the blowout bowl win over SMU – but with Jaylon Ferguson and all the good parts of the front six coming back, the D needs to do more.
