Hoops & Helmets: Ranking The Combination Of Football And Basketball Schools 1-130

By

Good Hoop, No Gridiron

These schools managed to miss out on both the NCAA Tournament and a bowl game. However, they at least got a winning season out of the basketball side.

105. Baylor Bears

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 1-11 overall, 1-7 in conference, 9th in Big 12

Basketball: 19-15 overall, 8-10 in conference, T6th in Big 12

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? The basketball team might have come up with a winning season, but it was an also-ran in the Big 12 race. Matt Rhule’s first season in the rebuild of the football program was a disaster, beating Kansas, and that was it.

104. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 2-10 overall, 1-7 in conference, 6th in AAV East

Basketball: 19-12 overall, 12-6 in conference, 4th in AAC

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? At least the basketball team had some fun. It was a disaster of a rebuilding campaign in football – there wasn’t any offense – but the hoops team finished in the league’s top four.

103. BYU Cougars

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 4-9 overall

Basketball: 24-11 overall, 11-7 in conference, 3rd in WCC

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? Even with a 24-win season, BYU failed to get into the NCAA Tournament, and got bounced out of the NIT. At least it was better than the miserable football campaign with little to no scoring and just four wins.

102. Indiana Hoosiers

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 5-7 overall, 2-7 in conference, T6th in Big Ten East

Basketball: 16-15 overall, 9-9 in conference, T6th in Big Ten

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? Isn’t Indiana basketball supposed to be a regular in the NCAA Tournament hunt and the Big Ten title chase? Not this year. The football team had a chance to go bowling but 1) didn’t, and 2) didn’t because it lost to Purdue.

101. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 4-8 overall, 3-6 in conference, 5th in Big Ten West

Basketball: 22-11 overall, 13-5 in conference, T4th in Big Ten

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? It might have been a disastrous losing football season, but it finished up by getting Scott Frost – it’s a win. Going 22-11 in basketball was great, right up until the Huskers were left out of the NCAAs and got bounced out of the NIT first round.

100. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 3-9 overall, 1-7 in conference, T5th in MW West

Basketball: 17-13 overall, 8-8 in conference, 6th in Big West

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? Neither major team did enough, struggling in football in a rough losing season, and ending up in the middle of the Big West pack in basketball.

99. Ball State Cardinals

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 2-10 overall, 0-8 in conference, 6th in MAC West

Basketball: 19-13 overall, 10-8 in conference, 3rd in MAC West

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? The Cardinals didn’t have any injury luck in football, finishing 2-10 in an ugly year. At least the basketball team had a little fun – despite losing its last four games – with 19 wins overall.

98. Georgia Southern Eagles

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 2-10 overall, 2-6 in conference, T10th in Sun Belt

Basketball: 21-12 overall, 11-7 in conference, 3rd in Sun Belt

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? Yeah, winning two games in football was a disaster, but the team rose up and started to play well after a late coaching change. It didn’t lead to anything, but 21 wins in basketball and third in the conference was excellent.

97. Idaho Vandals

Football: 4-8 overall, 3-5 in conference, T8th in Sun Belt

Basketball: 22-9 overall, 14-4 in conference, 2nd in Big Sky

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? It wasn’t a bad run in the Big Sky, finishing second in the league, but a big loss in the conference tournament ended the 22-win season with a thud. The football team won four games in its final year in the Sun Belt before getting the boot.

96. UNLV Rebels

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 5-7 overall, 4-4 in conference, 3rd in MW West

Basketball: 20-13 overall, 8-10 in conference, T7th in MW

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? The Rebels gacked to start the football season, and gacked to end it, ending up with a losing season. The 20-win basketball season was okay, but it didn’t finish with a tournament berth.

95. New Mexico Lobos

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 3-9 overall, 1-7 in conference, 6th in MW Mountain

Basketball: 19-15 overall, 12-6 in conference, 3rd in MW

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? The normally-sound football team got really, really ugly both on, and later, off the field. At least the basketball team provided a little fun finishing third in the conference.

94. Eastern Michigan Eagles

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 5-7 overall, 3-5 in conference, 5th in MAC West

Basketball: 22-13 overall, 11-7 in conference, 2nd in MAC West

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? The Eagles battled well in the MAC West hoops race, finishing just behind Toledo. It seemed like they couldn’t win any close games in football, ending up with a losing season.

93. Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 5-7 overall, 4-4 in conference, T5th in Sun Belt

Basketball: 27-7 overall, 16-2 in conference, 1st in Sun Belt

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? it would’ve been nice if the Ragin’ Cajuns could’ve come up with an extra win to get to a bowl game. It also would’ve been nice if they won their conference title after taking the regular season by four games, and then didn’t get bounced from the NIT in the first round.

92. Colorado Buffaloes

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 5-7 overall, 2-7 in conference, 6th in Pac-12 South

Basketball: 17-15 overall, 8-19 in conference, T8th in Pac-12

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? The Buffs couldn’t follow up their great 2016 football season, ending up with a losing campaign. The 17-15 basketball team couldn’t seem to buy a road win.

91. Maryland Terrapins

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 4-8 overall, 2-7 in conference, T6th in Big Ten East

Basketball: 19-13 overall, 8-10 in conference, 8th in Big Ten

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? Both seasons could’ve and should’ve been a whole lot better. More was expected from a basketball team that finished as an also-ran in Big Ten play, coming up with just 19 wins overall. The football side showed its upside with a win over Texas, and then the quarterback injuries kicked in.

90. Western Michigan Broncos

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 6-6 overall, 4-4 in conference, 4th in MAC West

Basketball: 17-15 overall, 9-9 in conference, 4th in MAC West

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? The Broncos got to six wins in a rebuilding football season, but it wasn’t enough to get any bowl love. The basketball team was also mediocre, going 17-15 and finishing in the middle of the MAC West pack.

89. Old Dominion Monarchs

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 5-7 overall, 3-5 in conference, 6th in C-USA East

Basketball: 25-7 overall, 15-3 in conference, 2nd in C-USA

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? The Monarchs had their chances to go bowling, and didn’t, blowing a few chances late in the season with everything on the line. The basketball team made up for it finishing second in the league in a disrespected 25-7 season.

88. UTSA Roadrunners

Football Spring Analysis & Ranking

Football: 6-5 overall, 3-5 in conference, 5th in C-USA West

Basketball: 20-15 overall, 11-7 in conference, 5th in C-USA

How Was The Football/Basketball Season? UTSA falls into a strange category as the only school to finish with winning seasons in both sports, but without going to a bowl or the NCAAs. The defense was fantastic, but the offense didn’t show up in a disrespected and disappointing season finishing 6-5. The Roadrunners finished in the top five in the basketball standings with a winning season.
