What You Need To Know About The Colorado Defense

– The Buff defensive front has to find a pass rush again. It’s no coincidence that the tremendous pressure in the backfield helped the great 2016 secondary pick off a ton of passes – and vice versa. Last year? Colorado couldn’t seem to get to the quarterback enough, finishing with just 19 sacks with six of those coming against Texas State early on, and four against Cal.

– There might be a ton of big losses on the defensive side, but there’s a good base of tacklers to work around. Drew Lewis and Rick Gamboa might have to be more disruptive, but they are two solid linebackers who’ll hit everything. Throw in safety Evan Worthington and CB Trey Udoffia, and the Buff secondary has hitters, but it loses star coverman Isaiah Oliver.

– The front three has to be far more of a rock against the run. After allowing 208 yards per game, the Buffs need 350-pound senior Javier Edwards to be more of an anchor. He needs more help around him to clean everything up. Coming off a strong year up front – with the stats helped by all of the stats – Colorado can’t allow over five yards per carry and 23 touchdowns again.

Biggest Key To The Colorado Defense

Get those turnovers back. In 2016, the Buffs generated a ton of pressure, and the great secondary picked off everything – or close to it. In 2017, there wasn’t enough pressure, and the takeaways didn’t come.

However, Colorado failed to come up with turnovers in the disastrous last two games – the Pac-12 Championship vs. Washington and blowout bowl loss to Oklahoma State – at the end of the ’16 campaign. And now the D is on a run of ten games in the last 14 with fewer than two takeaways.

Last year’s team forced 14 turnovers, and seven came in the first three games – all easy and all wins – and there weren’t any in the last three games, all losses.
