3. Buffalo will be this year’s Group of Five big deal
Buffalo won’t be UCF unbeaten great, and it won’t even be 2016 Western Michigan good. Think more 2017 Florida Atlantic.
By the way, before going on an amazing ten-game winning streak with a Conference USA championship and a Boca Raton Bowl win, who was the last team the Owls lost to?
The Bulls gave Minnesota a fight in the opener, lost to what turned out to be a great Army team on the road 21-17, lost a gajillion-overtime 71-68 classic to Western Michigan, lost 14-13 to Northern Illinois, 21-20 to Akron, and on the road by ten to Miami University.
They had reasonable chances to win every game, and took down Ohio late in the year. Even so, at 6-6 they didn’t get the call for a bowl game.
And now they will. UB will be even better.
There are road trips to Toledo and Ohio – both will be a problem – and going to Temple and Rutgers early on will be battles, but these Bulls are strong enough to win any and all games on the slate.
It’s not like they have to deal with anyone who’ll be fighting for a College Football Playoff spot.
Led by soon-to-be bigger-deal NFL quarterback prospect Tyree Jackson, the offense gets back eight starters, and the defense returns seven starters, starting with leading tackler LB Khalil Hodge.
And now, in Year Four of the Lance Leipold regime, it’s all about to come together.
