All You Really Need To Know About Villanova
Everything is working at the right time for Villanova, rolling to a Big East title and dominating the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament, winning all three by double digits.
But it was a fight to get by a tough-as-nails West Virginia team in the 90-78 win that was far nastier than the final score.
The Wildcats got outrebounded by the Mountaineers and gave up more turnovers, but the showed that extra-level offensive pop that no one else in the tournament has.
When it was time to turn it on, they did, and there wasn’t much of anything West Virginia could do to answer.
They hit 54% from three, nailed 23-of-27 free throws, and closed out like a team that knows how to win a national championship.
Just okay on D and good enough on the board, the Wildcats lead the nation in scoring, lead the nation in threes, and they get scoring – and the right pass – from veterans at the right time. It’s all working.
All You Really Need To Know About Texas Tech
The unbelievable run continues.
Texas Tech lost five of its last seven games before the Tournament, and there wasn’t anything happening to suggest it would be ready to go on a run.
And then, it all started to work, with Keenan Evans and the Red Raiders rolling through a dangerous Stephen F. Austin team, slipping past Florida, and then dominating Purdue.
It’s playing with supreme confidence. The Red Raiders hit 17-of-18 free throws, they managed to outbound the Boilermakers, and they managed to pull away when they had the chance to take over in the second half.
They didn’t put Purdue on the line – the Boilermakers tried just six free throws – but they usually commit too many fouls. They usually don’t do much from three, and they’re normally mediocre from the line.
But that’s all out the window now, taking their game up a whole other level.
What’s Going To Happen
Don’t just assume Villanova rolls at will.
Texas Tech isn’t all that deep, but it’s managing to turn up the defensive pressure and get the offense rolling from all the key parts.
However, Villanova is a machine. It’ll give up points, and this should be a bit of a shootout, but the Wildcats are built for this.
Texas Tech will come up with its share of runs, but just when it seems like the game is in doubt, then comes the big run to get the Wildcats back to the Final Four for the second time in three years.
