All You Really Need To Know About North Carolina Central
(MEAC), RPI: 282. 16-seed
The MEAC Tournament champs stunk in the regular season, but turned it on when they had to for the invite. Raasean Davis is a dangerous scorer, and he’s great on the boards with his running-mate, Pablo Rivas, but there’s not a whole lot of firepower.
They’re strong on the board, and the Eagles are decent from the field, but they don’t do much from three, they turn the ball over too often, and they stink from the free throw line. But can they win enough on the boards to make any noise?
All You Really Need To Know About Texas Southern
(SWAC) RPI: 227. 16-seed
The Tigers are looking for their first NCAA Tournament victory – going 0-7 in their history. Hot late in the season, they ripped through the last seven games and the SWAC tourney for the bid into the fun. Led by 23-point-per-game Demontrae Jefferson, it’s a good offensive team that can score in bunches.
Among the best teams in the country on the free throw line – finishing second in free throws made – it’s an okay offense from three, but it wins games on the inside and on the boards. There are a ton of blocked shots and lots of defensive rebounds, but the Tigers will turn it over too often.
What’s Going To Happen
Texas Southern doesn’t have the defense to come up with the big stop when needed.
It’ll get the offense rolling for a few stretches, but NC Central is too good a passing team to make the mistakes needed for the Tigers to win.
The Eagles will be patient when needed, will win the battle on the boards, and will be just good enough from three to overcome a few problems on the free throw line. They’ll have a hard time putting it away, but one big shot in the final minute will get it done.
