All You Really Need To Know About Tennessee (25-8)
(SEC), RPI: 8. 3-seed
Tied for first in the SEC regular season – but technically behind Auburn – and second in the conference tournament, Tennessee has put together a strong year winning 11 of 12 before running into Kentucky. It’s a well-coached, active team that’s great on the boards and has three terrific scorers to rely on.
It’s an unselfish team that moves the ball around well, guards everything, and gives the maximum effort for a full 40 minutes. The Vols led the SEC in defense and assists, making up for being just okay from three. It’s a relentless team.
All You Really Need To Know About Wright State (25-9)
(Horizon), RPI: 99. 14-seed
With excellent offensive balance and a whole lot of crashing the glass, it’s an active team that relies on its defense to get by. There aren’t any blocks, and there’s next to nothing at times from the outside on offense, but it’s fantastic at clamping down, only allowing one shot and forcing lots of mistakes.
The Raiders, though, are going to have a big-time problem with anyone who can get up early. There’s not a lot of firepower, the outside shooting is just okay, and it’s not the best of teams at creating the open shot. But they’ll battle and board.
What’s Going To Happen
Wright State needed to draw a finesse team that doesn’t do enough to get on the glass – that’s not Tennessee.
The Vol defense should keep the Raiders from scoring for long stretches, with a good scoring run or two being enough to get out of the first round without too much of a problem.
Wright State won’t make a ton of big mistakes for easy baskets, but Tennessee will hit a few key threes and own the interior when it has to.
