Sun Belt 2018 Spring Rankings

Based on how the teams appear to be before spring football is over.

10. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

The team gets its head coach back after missing most of last year, but can Joe Moglia work his magic for a team that needs more offensive pop? All five starters are back up front, but the firepower has to come on O.

9. Georgia State Panthers

After a big season with a bowl run, the Panthers should take a wee step back. It’s not like the offense did much of anything last year, and now there should be less excitement with an iffy quarterback situation. The defense, though, should be even better.

8. Texas State Bobcats

At some point, the solid recruiting classes are going to start kicking in for head coach Everett Withers. All five starters are back on the O line, the defense should finally start to make a positive turn, and all the lumps taking should pay off. Hopefully.

7. South Alabama Jaguars

New head coach Steve Campbell is walking into a decent situation, with most of the key parts back on offense and everyone returning in the secondary. Can the Jaguars finally be a bit more consistent? They should be just good enough to beat anyone in the conference, and now they have to beat all the little guys, too.

6. Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns

Arguably the Sun Belt’s biggest X factor, the Ragin’ Cajuns need a big spring to get more from the defense that has to replace just about everyone. No team in the conference has more big holes to fill, but the offense should be okay.

5. Georgia Southern Eagles

Can Chad Lunsford keep the momentum going after a strong late kick to last season? With all five starters back up front, the option attack should finally start to look the part on a regular basis again. With nine starters back on defense, this might be a bit of a Sun Belt title sleeper.

4. ULM Warhawks

It’s breakthrough time – at least it will be if the defense can figure out how to stop someone. The pieces are there on the offensive side, and nine starters return on D. Now the experience has to translate into production.

3. Arkansas State Red Wolves

Out of the big three Sun Belt teams, this one has the biggest question marks – by far. The defensive front might lose Ja’Von Rolland-Jones, but the big plays behind the line should still come from the rest of the parts. Justice Hansen is the league’s best quarterback, but he and the O have to stop turning the ball over.

2. Appalachian State Mountaineers

Quarterback Taylor Lamb is gone, but there’s still a whole lot to like. As long as the line doesn’t suffer a slew of injuries, the ground game will be fantastic again. The defense might have some retooling to do in the linebacking corps, but the secondary should be the best in the league.
Spring Analysis | Schedule Breakdown

1. Troy Trojans

Call this the Faith In Neal Brown ranking, assuming he’ll figure out how to fill in the missing pieces in a hurry. QB Brandon Silvers is done, and the main running backs have to be replaced, but the coaching staff and offensive line should be enough to keep things going. The defense has to find six new starters, but four of the top seven tacklers are back.
