All You Really Need To Know About Houston (26-6)
(American Athletic), RPI: 18. 5-seed
The losers of the American Athletic Tournament championship to Cincinnati are in with one of the nation’s most active teams that does a little bit of everything right. Four players average in double-digits on a nine-deep team that comes in waves.
It commits a whole lot of fouls, but it’s seventh in the nation in field goal defense, among the country’s best in rebounding margin, and great at pulling away when needed, beating teams by 13 points per game.
All You Really Need To Know About San Diego State (22-10)
(Mountain West), RPI: 59. 11-seed
Red hot at the right time, the Aztecs won nine straight, including a steamrolling run through the Mountain West tournament for the title. Five players average double-digit points, they all rebound, and they play with impressive confidence.
They play a crushing defense especially from three, and they’re great at jumping all over the boards and making possessions a one-and-done. They don’t do much from three, and they don’t block a lot of shots, but they’re doing everything right at the moment.
What’s Going To Happen
Can the Cougars handle the San Diego State defense? The Aztecs will bomb away from three, and Houston won’t.
The Aztecs don’t turn the ball over, they pass extremely well, and they have enough offensive pop to keep up with the Cougars when they get running.
However, Houston is too good on the boards compared to the Aztecs, and it’s fantastic at guarding from outside. The Mountain West champs will bring a terrific fight, but the Cougars will get the big board at the right time.
