All You Really Need To Know About Miami (22-9)
(ACC), RPI: 28. 6-seed
The Canes got past a late-season lull to beat North Carolina on the road, but lost to the Tar Heels in the tournament. It’s not a high-powered scoring team, but it’s able to overcome the lack of punch with a great defense and a deep bench.
AWFUL on the free-throw line, Miami hits just 67% of its tries. It doesn’t move the ball around well, there aren’t enough rebounds, and the three-point shooting is just okay, but it finds a way. It might not always be pretty, but rises up defensively.
All You Really Need To Know About Loyola-Chicago (28-5)
(Missouri Valley), RPI: 22. 11-seed
One of the fun stories of the season, the Ramblers won both the Missouri Valley regular season and conference tournaments, finishing up with a ten-game winning streak in dominant fashion – they dominated the league. It’s a balanced attack with five players averaging double-digits, doing a wonderful job of moving the ball around for the right shot.
There’s almost no rebounding whatsoever, especially on the offensive glass, but that’s partly because it’s one of the nation’s best-shooting teams. There isn’t a lot happening from three, but the selflessness leads to easy points, there aren’t a lot of giveaways on fouls, and there just aren’t many mistakes. Free throws and teams with interior bulk – both will be an issue.
What’s Going To Happen
Loyola will get killed by anyone who hits the boards hard, but that’s not Miami.
The Rambler defense should be able to lock down, and the offense will annoyingly hit just about everything, especially at the right time from three. Miami can guard from the outside, but the Ramblers will keep coming with the offensive balance.
Miami will keep missing free throws late with everything on the line, and the Ramblers will hit theirs to pull off the thrilling upset.
