All You Really Need To Know About LIU-Brooklyn (18-16)
(Northeast), RPI: 235. 16-seed
One of the bigger stunners of the tournament season, the Blackbirds rolled through their final five games and beat Wagner on the way to the Northeast title. It’s a high-flying attack that attacks the rim, is great at getting to the line, and doing it all off of rebounds on both ends of the court.
Turnovers are a massive problem, and defensive is optional at times, but it’s a good team at guarding from beyond the arc. There’s a chance they can bomb their way to a solid game, but they have to live on the free throw line.
All You Really Need To Know About Radford (22-12)
(Big South), RPI: 136. 16-seed
Just happy to get into the fun and have a shot, the Big South champs are on a seven-game winning streak, getting in on a wild buzzer-beater shot to get by Liberty. The Highlanders shoot plenty of threes, but they don’t score a lot – they win on defense. Very, very active, they’re great at attacking the offensive glass, and they sell out to create points off turnovers.
The problem? They aren’t able to translate their ability on the boards to the defensive side, and they need games to slow down a wee bit. There’s not enough of an inside offensive presence, and they’re mediocre on the free-throw line. Make games a shootout, and they’re in trouble.
What’s Going To Happen
Do you like the LIU Brooklyn offense, or the Radford defense? The Blackbirds are way, way too turnover prone against a defense like the Highlanders crank up, but they’re good enough at coming up with plenty of rebounds to make up for most of their problems.
LIU-Brooklyn is also terrific at guarding from three, and since Radford doesn’t come up with a whole lot of big plays from the outside, get ready for stretches when the game bogs down.
The Highlanders will do more on the boards – and will be better on the line – to survive a whole slew of mistakes.
