All You Really Need To Know About Kansas (27-7)
(Big 12), RPI: 4. 1-seed
Another year, another Big 12 championship. The Jayhawks took home both the regular season and conference tournament, but they’re overdue to go on a big NCAA run again. With five players scoring 12 points or more, the scoring diversity is there to do it.
However, it’s not the deepest of teams, with just seven playing a large role. It’s a strong shooting team inside and out, it’s fantastic from three, and doesn’t screw itself up with a whole lot of mistakes. There aren’t enough offensive rebounds, and the free throw line is the Achilles’ heel, but it’s maddeningly consistent, with the ability to turn it on when needed to pull away.
All You Really Need To Know About Penn (24-8)
(Ivy), RPI: 108. 16-seed
The Quakers hung on late to beat Harvard to take the conference tournament title after tying the Crimson in the regular season. It’s a great team on the boards, but it’s not all that deep, and there isn’t a ton of scoring power. It makes up for a slew of problems by using its solid size to grab just about every defensive rebound.
It’s the second-best defense in the country at stopping teams from three, and it’s suffocating at times defensively. What it doesn’t do is hit free throws, and it’s not all that great on the offensive boards, but the D does the job.
What’s Going To Happen
Can Penn’s defense and rebounding ability be enough to keep this close?
The Quakers don’t force enough steals and they’re not going to do much on the offensive glass, but the bigger problem will be when Kansas goes on a second half run that won’t be answered.
The Jayhawks will tear away in the middle of the second half after Penn makes this a bit of a grind for a while. Even with their size, the Quakers won’t have the interior presence, even though they’ll give the Jayhawk outside shooters a hard time.
