All You Really Need To Know About Gonzaga (30-4)

(West Coast), RPI: 21. 4-seed

Even with blowout wins over Ohio State and Creighton, the annual West Coast Conference champs aren’t being given a whole lot of love and national respect and attention. The relatively light rest of the schedule is part of it, but the other problem is that it’s Gonzaga. One national title appearance still doesn’t seem to be enough to bring the love.

A dominant offensive machine, five Bulldogs average 11 points or more with great shooting from the outside, everyone doing a great job on the boards, and as always, terrific coaching – the team always makes the right extra pass. However, it can be bombed on by a good outside shooting team.

All You Really Need To Know About UNC-Greensboro (27-7)

(Southern), RPI: 65. 13-seed

Blow off all of the turnovers, all of the big mistakes, and the inability to hit free throws. The SoCon regular season and conference champs shoot a whole lot of threes – they bomb their way out of bad situations. Amazing at coming up with steals, and even better and turning them into deep shots, the Spartans are dangerous.

It’s a mistake-prone team in a whole lot of ways, but it plays tough defense, it spread at hitting the boards from all sides, and it’s fine getting into shootouts. As long as Francis Alonso and Marvin Smith are hitting from outside, this team has a shot.

What’s Going To Happen

Watch out …. this is a dangerous game for a Gonzaga team that’s good, but it beatable.

The Bulldogs don’t force a slew of big mistakes and turnovers – the Spartans’ big problem – but the bigger concern is their mediocrity at guarding from three. This is still a tight Zag team that grabs every rebound and scores in bunches, but it’ll have to be ready for a wild shootout.

The Spartans will make this a nasty battle, but they’ll fail on the free throw line late.
