All You Really Need To Know About Clemson (23-9)
(ACC), RPI: 11. 5-seed
The Tigers struggled down the stretch with five losses in their last eight games, but they pushed Virginia a bit before getting bounced out of the ACC Tournament. There’s talent, and there’s a whole lot of scoring punch up top, with five players averaging double digit points. However, there’s not a whole lot of scoring from the supporting cast.
Rebounding is a problem, hitting enough free throws is a bigger issue, and there aren’t enough steals for a team that doesn’t do much to slow down the threes, but the defense is tough and aggressive inside, and there are a whole lot of blocks and stops.
All You Really Need To Know About New Mexico State (28-5)
(WAC), RPI: 36. 12-seed
The WAC champ has good size and enough scoring pop to be dangerous. 20 point-per-game scorer Zach Lofton is the bomber, but Jemerrio Jones is the double-double machine who’s the key to the team.
Outstanding on the boards, and with one of the best defenses in the country, it’s a tough team that won’t get pushed around. It doesn’t do a whole lot from three, and it doesn’t come up with enough steals, but worst of all, the team can’t shoot free throws, hitting 64% of their tries.
What’s Going To Happen
The Aggies will dominate on the boards, they’ll own the interiors and they’ll force Clemson to shoot from three.
The Tigers are good enough to hit from outside, but NMSU is among the best teams in the country in defending from the outside, and it’ll grab every defensive board.
It might not be the most scintillating game, but the Aggies can score enough to overcome their massive problems on the free throw line. NMSU doesn’t do a lot of things well, but it’ll pull off the big upset thanks to its D.
