All You Really Need To Know About Cincinnati (30-4)
(American Athletic), RPI: 6. 2-seed
The Bearcats won both the American Athletic regular season and tournament championships, cranking through their final seven games with a close win over Houston to take the automatic bid. A nasty team that attacks defensively, four players average 11 points or more with a deep bench.
The Bearcats are second in the nation scoring defense and lead the country in scoring margin, beating teams by a an average of 17.8 points per game. Great at blocking shots, amazing on the offensive boards, and excellent at coming up with the extra pass, this is a dangerous all-around team.
All You Really Need To Know About Georgia State (24-10)
(Sun Belt), RPI: 119. 15-seed
Winners of four straight with a Sun Belt Tournament championship to get in, the Panthers are deep, have lots of scoring options around 21-point scorer D’Marcus Simonds, and have the ability to score in bunches.
It’s a good team from three, but the key is the defense that led the Sun Belt and finished ninth in the country in field goal percentage allowed. They’ll need to bomb away to stay in games and pull away when needed, but they have to hit them – there’s not a lot happening on the boards, and free throw shooting is a problem.
What’s Going To Happen
Can Georgia State recreate the fun magic of a few years ago and go on a special run? Considering the score will be kept low, the Panthers will have a puncher’s chance if they can hit a few threes.
They have a good formula to get it done against the stifling Bearcats, but they’ll have a hard time shaking free to make things happen from deep.
Cincinnati just doesn’t let anyone score. Every point will feel like gold, and considering Georgia State’s problems on the line, it’s going to be a struggle to keep up after the Bearcats get up early.
