4. South Carolina Gamecocks
Current Odds To Win The National Title: 175/1
It wasn’t always pretty, but in 2012, Will Muschamp’s 2012 Florida team found plenty of ways to win, going 11-1 before the bowl. It missed out on the SEC Championship thanks to a loss to Georgia, but it was still really, really close to getting into the national title mix.
Muschamp’s South Carolina team might not have the same defense as the 2012 Gators, but the offense should be far better with Deebo Samuel and a strong receiving corps helping out QB Jake Bentley.
The talent might not be at the level of Georgia, Alabama or Auburn, but the Gamecocks get the Bulldogs in Columbia in the second week of the season, and they don’t have to face the Crimson Tide, Tigers, or LSU. It’s about as easy a slate as could reasonably asked for from then up – up until the regular season finale.
As long as USC beats Georgia, it can afford another loss along the way – there’s no Alabama, LSU or Auburn on the slate from the West – until finishing up at Clemson.
Even if the Gamecocks are 10-2, the loss to the Tigers wouldn’t matter a whole lot in the CFP discussion if they’re really that good. Winning the SEC Championship, though, would mean everything – obviously.
Get to 10-2, get to the SEC Championship, and the puck will be on the stick with a shot to get in.
Okay, no, but at 175/1 …
