Auburn Tigers Spring Status

The Tigers just ran out of gas.

They might have come up with an impressive win over Alabama, but they were beaten up, lost the SEC Championship to Georgia and the Peach Bowl to UCF to sour an otherwise amazing season, but they were right there. They were one game away from the College Football Playoff.

And now they should be even better.

It all starts with getting QB Jarrett Stidham back for another year. Four starters might be done on the O line, but the receiving corps is loaded, it’s a deep group of backs, and the defense should be terrific as long as the secondary can restock in a hurry.

The system works, the talent is there, and there’s even a little bit of stability in the coaching staff. It’s all there to take that one step further.

Auburn Biggest Depth Chart Battle

Offensive tackle. There’s a battle at running back, the safeties have to step up, and the defensive front has to come up with a few new starting options. But the offensive line has the big holes, losing guard Braden Smith, center Casey Dunn, and tackles Darius James and Austin Golson.

It would’ve been nice to have landed Rice grad transfer Calvin Anderson, but now it’ll be up to Prince Tego Wanogho and Calvin Ashley to provide pieces on the outside to build around.

Auburn Biggest Issue

Fumbles. Overall, the the Tigers weren’t that bad in turnover margin, but 14 of the 20 giveaways on the year were fumbles with five in the last four games. Stidham didn’t throw a lot of picks, but after giving away just eight fumbles in 2016 and five in 2015, the offense’s ball security has to be tighter.

Auburn Biggest Positive

The passing game. Can Stidham be the first quarterback off the board in the 2019 NFL Draft? He should be close, and he gets back all of his wide receivers. the top five wideouts are back. The Tigers and Stidham spread the ball around well with a nice mix of dangerous veterans and young talents rising up.

Really, Why Are The Auburn Tigers Ranked Here?

The holes aren’t that huge to fill. The running game will still be amazing, the defense has talent at linebacker, there are plenty of young talents ready to roll, and Stidham will be one of the nation’s best quarterbacks. Expect more of the same from last season.
