All You Really Need To Know About Arizona (27-7)
(Pac-12), RPI: 13. 4-seed
Sean Miller is still the head coach, everyone’s still playing, the Wildcats haven’t had to vacate anything, and everything is just fine. The Pac-12 champs ripped through the tournament, but can it translate into a good run? Deandre Ayton gets to put on a show before becoming a top three NBA draft pick – if not No. 1 overall – but he’s hardly alone on a deep and dangerous team with the talent to win it all.
However, they’ve had the skill before under Miller, and fizzled. This team doesn’t do much from three, but it’s fantastic on the inside – thanks to Ayton – owns the glass, and when it does shoot from the outside, it’s not bad. However, it’ll turn it over too much and doesn’t come up with steals.
All You Really Need To Know About Buffalo (26-8)
(MAC), RPI: 25. 13-seed
The MAC champs rolled through the last six games with a big-time offense that sets a nasty pace that makes it almost impossible to keep up. Four Bulls average 14 points or more, led by CJ Massinburg and his 17 points per game, but he’s hardly carrying the workload alone.
Outstanding at moving the ball around and finding the right shot, this team gets on the move and hits just about everything. The MAC’s best rebounding team is also the best shooting team, with a whole lot of threes, a whole lot of second chance points, and with a dangerous style that’ll make it a tough out.
What’s Going To Happen
Buffalo would be the most dangerous 13-seed in the tournament, and worthy of picking, if it was playing any other four than Arizona.
The Bulls can come up with their share of blocks, they’ll crank out the rebounds, and they’ll make the easy shots. Ayton, though, is Ayton, doing more on the inside and negating the UB advantage on the boards.
The Buffalo three-point shooting will keep the game alive, and the inability to hit free throws will end up getting Arizona the win, but it’ll be a fight. The Wildcats will need the full 40 minutes.
