2018 NFL Mock Draft: Free Agency Version

The NFL Combine is long over and a slew of big things happened in the free agency world. Now that the needs, wants and desires have changed a bit – along with a few big trades – how does the first round look?

From the college perspective, here are the correct answers.

In the Mock Draft If Done Correctly spot, those are all the picks how they should go if the teams actually do this right – which they won’t.

Of course there will be trades to screw this all up, but …

1. Cleveland Browns

The Pick Will Be: QB Sam Darnold, USC

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
DE Bradley Chubb, NC State

The Browns could take a chance that one of the quarterbacks they like falls to four – or they might not even mess with it.

Sam Darnold didn’t wet himself at his pro day, and that might be enough. He’s got the temperament and the upside to be special, but he’s still a project. As long as Cleveland understands that he’s not a rock-solid sure thing – he’s not another Andrew Luck or Cam Newton – and lives through a few years of mega-interception totals for a possible payoff, okay.

Chubb, on the other side of Myles Garrett, though, would be too amazing. Good luck with the Brown pass rush if they pulled the trigger.

2. New York Giants

The Pick Will Be: RB Saquon Barkley, Penn State

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
QB Josh Rosen, UCLA

The Giants need a quarterback, but they’re also going to hope and pray they can get two more years out of Eli Manning. Barkley is the instant game-changing pick they need – even though Rosen would be the stronger selection for the franchise’s near future.

3. New York Jets (from Indianapolis)

The Pick Will Be: qb Josh Rosen, UCLA

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
QB Sam Darnold, USC

You don’t trade up to the three unless there’s a quarterback there you like. The Jets will hope and pray the Giants don’t screw them up and take Rosen, and if they do, welcome to the Josh Allen era.

4. Cleveland Browns (from Houston)

The Pick Will Be: DE Bradley Chubb, NC State

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
RB Saquon Barkley, Penn State

The Browns are in a beautiful spot. They can trade down to a quarterback-hungry team – hey, Buffalo, what’s up? – or they can get a devastating, right-out-of-the-box star in Chubb falling in their lap. And if, somehow, Saquon Barkley falls here, that’s fine, too.

5. Denver Broncos

The Pick Will Be: QB Josh Allen, Wyoming

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
CB Denzel Ward, Ohio State

Yes, the Broncos already whiffed and whiffed big on a prospect quarterback in Paxton Lynch, and yes, they signed on Case “Keesum” – as John Elway called Keenum – but they need a next-level passer to develop. Getting Allen is perfect – give him a year or so to be ready.

DE | DT | LB | CB | S

6. Indianapolis Colts (from Jets)

The Pick Will Be: OG Quenton Nelson, Notre Dame

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
LB Tremaine Edmunds, Virginia Tech

Don’t expect the Colts to hang around here – they’ll trade down further to give someone a shot at a quarterback – but if they hang, upgrading the O line with a ten-year pro in Nelson would be easy.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Pick Will Be: S Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
S Derwin James, Florida State

Flip a coin between the two safeties – there’s no wrong answer between Minkah Fitzpatrick or Derwin James. Actually, that’s not right. James is the correct call.

8. Chicago Bears

The Pick Will Be: Cb denzel ward, ohio State

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
OG Quenton Nelson, Notre Dame

The Bears addressed their receiver problem, and they have corners, but they could also use a really, really good defensive back to erase one side of the field. Ward has top five overall stock and would be a relative steal here.

9. San Francisco 49ers

The Pick Will Be: lb Tremaine Edmunds, Virginia tech

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
DE Marcus Davenport, UTEP

The Niners need a pass rusher, and in a dream world, Quenton Nelson falls here to address the guard problems. But Edmunds is that not-sure-what-he-is shot for the stars as a possible hybrid type who gets turned loose and makes things happen.

10. Oakland Raiders

The Pick Will Be: LB Roquan Smith, Georgia

The Mock Draft If Done Correctly pick …
LB Roquan Smith, Georgia

There’s a chance at picking up a corner like UCF’s Mike Hughes or Iowa’s Josh Jackson, but the Raiders also need an inside linebacker to lock down the corps. Roquan Smith would be an easy call.
