Daily Five: Wide Receiver Rankings Going Into The 2018 NFL Combine

By

3. James Washington, Oklahoma State

Career Statistics: 226 catches for 4,472 yards and 39 touchdowns, 70 rushing yards and a score.

Why James Washington Is Here On The List: It’ll be interesting to see and hear after Indianapolis where everyone is on him – he’s going to be the most polarizing receiver in the draft.

To some, he’s going to be seen as a devastating playmaking deep threat who can take over games and stretch the field for everyone else. Even when he was keyed on by every defensive scheme, he found ways to get open and make things happen.

However, he might just be a one-trick guy. It’s an amazing one as a home run hitter, but can he do everything else? Yeah, he can play just about every receiving spot, and he’s talented enough to adjust to what’s needed, but more than anything else, he’s a fun player who some quarterback is going to lobby for.

What The NFL Types Want To See: 40 time, 40 time, 40 time. He doesn’t have the body type or the look – he’s 6-0 and 205 pounds – and he was never asked to be the most creative of route-runners, but he has to be fast. He’s worth a top 50 pick as a devastating college producer, but that deep play ability has to translate to the next-level. That will come from the 40.

Bottom Line: Don’t overthink this too much. The Oklahoma State coaches couldn’t gush more about him, and he might just be a good football player who breaks a lot of the norms. The technique doesn’t look right, the body doesn’t look right, and there seems like there’s something missing – and then he cranks up a 56-yard touchdown catch.
