What’s Going To Happen

There’s no crazy-intense pressure this time around.

Army won last year – the monkey of a long losing streak is off its back.

Navy doesn’t need this to become bowl eligible. is off to face Virginia in the Military Bowl Presented by Northrop Grumman.

Army has been set for weeks – it’s off to the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl to deal with San Diego State.

Both senior classes have a win in the rivalry, both have solid coaching situations that should keep the production rolling, and both teams that that one extra game – for some, this won’t be the last game for the rest of their lives.

There’s no crazy-intense pressure. Except that it’s Army vs. Navy – and they’re both good.

Army can win the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy for the first time since 1996 – getting by the Falcons 21-0 in early November – with a run defense that sauce down the option to a dead stop. This isn’t a killer defensive front, and it doesn’t do a while lot to get into the backfield.

The Black Knights O has to keep the undersize D off the field, ranking No. 1 in the country in third down conversions and fourth in time of possession. There’s no passing game, but with FB Andy Davidson thumping inside, and QB Ahmad Bradshaw running the machine to near perfection in his third year at the starting helm, the attack is devastating.

Navy has played a far, far tougher schedule, having to deal with Memphis, UCF and Notre Dame, losing all three in an ugly run of five losses in six games. But it needed the time off.

With QB Zach Abey back and ready, this could and should look like a different team than the one that struggled down the stretch. He ran for 100 yards or more in each of the first seven games, and then struggled to get anything going in the last four he was a part of.

But now he’s ready, but is the defense?

Is this going to be the Navy D that held Notre Dame in check, or will it be the one that got hit by Air Force for 340 rushing yards and four scores?

Both teams will do the exact same thing – but even more than usual. Both quarterbacks will be the key, but Army has a few more rushing weapons to balance out the three timely passes Abey will connect.

Army is a wee bit better at getting into backfield, and it’s far better at taking care of the ball with just nine giveaways on the year. That one extra takeaway will be the difference.
