Washington blew it.

It would’ve been in the mix for the College Football Playoff discussion, but it couldn’t handle an injured Bryce Love, and the offense couldn’t get going against the Stanford defense, and now it has to hope and pray for Cal to get by the Cardinal.

There’s still hope for the Pac-12 title, needing to beat the Utes, get by Washington State, and then, again, get a win from Cal.

But at least the Huskies are going bowling. Utah still needs one more win to get there.

The Utes have crashed and burned ever since beating Arizona – before the Wildcats figured out that Khalil Tate was good – and now has to beat either U-Dub in Seattle or take down Colorado to go bowling in what’s turning into a disaster of a season.

One Reason Why Utah Will Win

Didn’t you used to be the Washington passing game?

The ground attack is getting the job done – for the most part – and the defense is doing most of the work, but the Huskies still need the passing game to get going at some point.

Solid and efficient over the first half of the season, UW can’t get to 200 yards without pushing. It was able to do it in the blowout win over Oregon, but against Arizona State (loss), UCLA (all running game) and Stanford (loss), no touchdown passes, nothing happening down the field, and no yards, failing to hit the 200-yard mark in any of the three.

The Utah pass defense has been solid. It’s good at coming up with picks, it’s not awful on third downs, and it’s solid at holding up against the big passing games. But …

One Reason Why Washington Will Win

This Utah team can’t convert a third down, and it can’t seem to stop turning the ball over.

The Utes are converting an awful 34.6% of their third down chances, ailing to get to the 35% mark in four of the last five games – only hitting 50% in the win over UCLA.

And then there’s the turnover problem.

The defense is doing its part on a regular basis to come up with big things – forcing 22 takeaways on the year – but the offense just lost to Wazzu because of the seven giveaways. Now. the Utes are -7 over the last six games.

The Huskies might not be perfect, but the team is solid when it comes to mistakes at a +6 on the season.

What’s Going To Happen

Washington will bounce back.

At home, the defense will find its funk again, especially against the run, coming up with three takeaways, and the ground game will get control early with a nice 250-yard day.

Utah is better than the record, but it’s not solid enough on both sides to handle a Washington team that really, really needs this at home.
