It was the moment when Washington announced its arrival as the star of the Pac-12.
The Huskies were 4-0 and struggled past a bad Arizona team, but with the world watching, they ripped apart Stanford 44-6 and followed it up with a 70-21 blowout of Oregon. And that was about it.
They got to 12-1, won the Pac-12 title, and went off to the College Football Playoff.
Washington can’t wrap up the North with a win and a Washington State loss to Utah, but it can be on the doorstep. As long as the Huskies can get through the Cardinal, and then take care of home against Utah, and then win the Apple Cup over Wazzu, they’ll be back in the Pac-12 title game against – most likely – USC.
But Stanford can shift things and make a statement of its own.
It needs help after losing to Washington State, but if it wins against the Huskies, and if Wazzu losses one of its last two games, then it takes the North with a win over Cal.
This hasn’t been a pretty season for the Cardinal, but it can close out strong by ruining UW’s playoff hopes, and possibly ruining Notre Dame’s run. But …
One Reason Why Washington Will Win
Stanford just isn’t that good.
It seems like it should be solid, and Bryce Love has been terrific when he’s healthy, but there’s just no offense right now. The passing game is worthless, and Love isn’t right.
The former Heisman candidate tore off a 52-yard run against Wazzu, and ran for a grand total of 14 yards the rest of the way.
And how did K.J. Costello and the passing game help the cause? 9-of-20 for 105 yards and a pick.
Washington State has a strong defense that doesn’t get enough credit compared to the offense, but Washington’s defense is even better.
Yeah, Oregon ran for 247 yards against the Dawgs last week – and lost 38-3. The Washington defensive front will load up on Love and make the Cardinal passing game win.
But the Huskies are third in the nation in pass defense.
One Reason Why Stanford Will Win
The defense has been good enough to make this ugly.
Washington had to muck it up once, and it didn’t come through with a 13-7 loss to Arizona State. And here’s the big problem – along with Fresno State, ASU was the only team UW has played that’s sure to go bowling.
Yes, Washington lead the Pac-12 in several categories. Yes, the defending conference champ looks the part again of a team with the upside to go to the national championship. Yes, the team really is good, and … it hasn’t played anyone.
At home, Stanford has to prove the push. It’s 3-0 in Palo Alto, blowing out UCLA and Oregon and beating Arizona State by ten.
It has to get Love and the running game going early, the defense has to get to Jake Browning and be a problem, and this has to be the moment when the team shows it’s really good enough to be a part of the Pac-12 title chase.
What’s Going To Happen
Washington is great, and it just so happens to have played a bad schedule.
The defensive front will bottle up Love, the Cardinal passing game won’t work, and the Huskies will get by, but it’ll be tough. It’s not going to be a layup, but Washington will get by and move on.
It won’t be inspiring, but it’ll be a win. Right now for UW, that’s all that matters.
