Both teams have rebounded in a big way, and now it’s all about the rivalry and the implications to come.
USC is in the Pac-12 championship. Outside of bragging rights, this game doesn’t matter a lick to the overall scope of human life. If the Trojans lose, they go to the Pac-12 title game needing a win to get to a New Year’s Six bowl. If the Trojans win, they go to the Pac-12 title game needing a win to get to a New Year’s Six bowl.
However, if they lose, they just might be able to keep Jim Mora Jr. around.
It’s been a year on the hot seat for the UCLA head coach, but every time it seems like he’s about to be totally hosed, the Bruins come up with a huge win to keep things alive.
With a strong victory over Arizona State, now UCLA just needs to win one of its final two games – with Cal to close next week – to go bowling. Win both and a bowl game, and the UCLA head man might just make it through the storm.
But even more than that, it’s all about the future NFL franchise quarterbacks.
USC vs. UCLA always matters, but it’s Sam Darnold vs. Josh Rosen. This will be the time capsule game everyone will remember if these two somehow become the Brady vs. Manning of the next NFL generation.
For now, considering Rosen was hurt for last year’s game, simply a fun shootout would be nice.
One Reason Why USC Will Win
Everyone will show up to see Darnold, and it’ll be Ronald Jones II who’ll be the star.
The slippery-smooth junior exploded for 121 yards and two scores in the 36-14 win over the Bruins last year. This time around, he might do that in a quarter if everything goes right.
On fire ever since he was shut down by Notre Dame for 32 yards on 12 carries, he ripped apart Arizona State for 216 yards, followed it up with almost 200 yards against Arizona, and last week rolled by Colorado for 142 yard and a score.
And now he gets to rumble against the UCLA run defense that’s among the worst in college football.
The defensive front is getting gouged week-in-and-week-out, getting hit for 200 yards or more in every game but two – and Memphis spent all of its time bombing away. Teams aren’t just productive; they’re committing to the run and able to stay with it.
Be very, very disappointed if Mr. Jones doesn’t hit two bills.
One Reason Why UCLA Will Win
The Trojan secondary is about to get tested again in a big, big way.
It’s been fine for the most part this season playing a whole slew of passing-challenged teams, but Washington State’s Luke Falk was able to Luke Falk up with 340 yards, and last week, Colorado’s Steven Montez threw for 376 yards and two scores.
He might not be 100%, but Rosen continues to look the part of a next-level superstar who might just fit in Cleveland Brown or New York Giant colors in the near future.
Back after missing the Utah game, he threw for 381 yards and a score in the win over Arizona State, and now he’s going to keep the pressure on from the stat.
He might not be consistent, and he’ll misfire on a few too many key plays – he hasn’t hit 60% of his throws in a game since September – but he’ll have to keep firiing without the ground game to take advantage of the occasionally-porous run D.
What’s Going To Happen
Rosen will be what everyone wants to see- he’ll bomb away for a huge day – but he’ll give up two key picks as he keeps on pressing.
USC will run at will. Darnold won’t have to force anything, he won’t have to press, and he’ll keep things moving on third downs to keep control of the game.
Expect a fun firefight, at least 800 yards of total offense, and a good USC win on the way to the Pac-12 title game.
