West Virginia is still in this. It would take something big, and it would take a few meltdowns from some other teams, but if the Mountaineers can beat Texas and beat Oklahoma, they’ll be in the mix for the Big 12 Championship.
Texas is just trying to get bowl eligible.
Beating Texas Tech next week shouldn’t be too much of an issue, but it would be nice to get it done this week and get that sixth win, making it a nice first step under Tom Herman.
One Reason Why Texas Will Win
Texas has to win the turnover battle and need to control the clock. It can’t get into a shootout, and it has to be a +2 – start picking off passes.
The Longhorns haven’t lost the turnover margin since the USC loss. They’re 3-0 when going a +2, and they’re 4-1 when the come up with two or more takeaways.
Giveaways continue to be a problem for the Mountaineers, losing the ball ten times in the last three weeks with seven interceptions. Last week against Kansas State was the first time this season when they won a game when being on the wrong side of the mistakes, going 0-3 in when they were in the negative.
The Longhorns should have the ball for at least 33 minutes, and they have to take advantage of every opportunity because …
One Reason Why West Virginia Will Win
Shane Buechele and the Texas passing game have been fine, and the running game is good, this should get into a firefight in a hurry – West Virginia is better equipped for it.
Will Grier and the passing game will crank it up.
Again, they have to limit the mistakes after Grier threw way too many picks over the last three games – killing the team with the four interceptions against Oklahoma State. But he’s also pushing the envelope each and every week, hitting the 300-yard mark in every game but the 285-yard performance against the Cowboys.
The Mountaineer O line has been solid, but there won’t be much from the ground game. It’s all on Grier.
What’s Going To Happen
The Texas defense is just solid enough to make the Mountaineers one-dimensional, but it’s the final home game of the year for a West Virginia team still pushing for something special.
The Longhorns will stay in the game with two picks, but Grier will come through with a strong fourth quarter for a fantastic win.
