There really and truly still is hope for Tennessee.
After suffering yet another painful loss – losing late to Kentucky – the Vols bounced back to beat Southern Miss to keep bowl hopes alive.
Yes, they still have yet to win an SEC game, and yes, the offense is still a problem, but beat Missouri, split against LSU and Vanderbilt at home, go bowling. It might not be pretty, and it might not be what Vol fans were hoping for, but if you’re not winning the SEC East title, going bowling is going bowling.
The same goes for Mizzou.
After a brutal start to the season, the Tigers have ripped off three straight, destroying Florida last week with an offense that’s humming and a defense that finally showed up.
It’s the final home game, but the final two road games against Vanderbilt and Arkansas are winnable. Take two of the three, go bowling, and what looked to be a dead season suddenly looks a whole lot better.
One Reason Why Tennessee Will Win
Idaho, UConn, and a dead Florida team walking.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Missouri has gone on a three-game winning streak looking great along the way, but there haven’t been a slew of killers on the slate.
This is still a team with a shaky defense that’s awful on third downs, and the team is still dead last in college football in time of possession.
Scoring quickly is fine, but if the Vol defense can rise up and come up with third down stops, slow the game down and keep the score low, the chances will be there late. However …
One Reason Why Missouri Will Win
The Tennessee offense really, really, really can’t convert on third downs.
Three times in the last five games the Volunteers have converted fewer than 16% of their chances, including against Southern Miss hitting just 2-of-13 tries.
The offense might have come up with two John Kelly touchdown runs against USM, but getting into the end zone continues to be an issue. This team just can’t score.
Missouri got out to a big start against the Gators, with the red hot Drew Lock and RB Larry Rountree going off, helping the way to 28 first half points. Do that against the Vols, and game over.
What’s Going To Happen
Missouri appears to have found it.
The defense is still suspect, but fortunately, Tennessee continues to be awful at everything but handing the ball off to Kelly.
Lock will be solid right away, the offense will be balanced, and the Mizzou run will continue.
