What the heck was that, Stanford?
Yeah, you didn’t have Bryce Love, but to clunk like that and come so close to losing to Oregon State? That’s not okay.
Wha the heck was that, Washington State?
The Cougars lost two of their last three games after a red-hot 6-0 start. That’s not okay.
But here’s the nice part of this for both teams. The winner of this still controls its Pac-12 destiny.
If Wazzu wins, it has two road games at Utah and Washington to close – win those, play for the conference championship.
If Stanford wins, it not only has Washington and Cal left at home – win those, play for the conference championship – but it has a shot at potentially screwing up Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff dream in the regular season finale.
One Reason Why Stanford Will Win
Washington State is a bit of a mess – if that’s possible after throwing for 602 yards.
Luke Falk took a seat against Arizona, and Tyler Hilinski came in and threw for 509 yards and two scores with two rushing scores, and he gave away four interceptions.
Now Falk is supposedly starting again, but he wasn’t great, a few weeks ago the team was “pathetic” – according to head coach Mike Leach – in the loss to Cal, and in the rain against Colorado, the team was just okay.
The Cougars can’t come up with the same performance two weeks in a row, and now they’ve lost their last two road games.
Stanford might not have been able to run much against Oregon State, but Bryce Love is going to be a gametime decision on his bad ankle against a defensive front that just got hit for 310 yards and over nine yards per carry in the 58-37 loss to Arizona.
Speaking of pathetic …
One Reason Why Washington State Will Win
Keller Chryst was a disaster against the Beavers.
He might have come up with the one late fourth down throw to save the day, and he threw a touchdown pass to take the lead, but he was far, far worse than even his 16-of-33 passing stats would indicate.
And now he’s being replaced. It’ll be K.J. Costello’s offense to run, but at this point in the season, the Cardinal needed to have their passing attack in place.
Defensively, Stanford isn’t generating enough pressure from the line. It’s not getting to the quarterback and it’s not coming up with enough key plays in the backfield. Against Falk and the passing game that has to be thrown off its rhythm, the Cardinal can’t do it.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s not about Bryce Love. It’s about a Washington State defense that’s fantastic on third downs, against a Stanford offense that doesn’t have the passing game to come up with key plays to keep the drives moving.
At home, Washington State has been a bit of a different animal. Falk will be fantastic and sharp, the defensive front will come out roaring after being embarrassed by Arizona, and the team will jump right back in the Pac-12 title chase with a terrific win.
