The Big Game really matters now.

For Cal, it’s about establishing itself in the first year under Justin Wilcox, getting bowl eligible with a win over the arch rival. If it doesn’t happen this week, there’s still a shot against UCLA – who’ll probably have to win at home to get bowl eligible – but it would be far, far more fun to get it now.

For Stanford, win, hope for Washington beat Washington State, and it’s off to the Pac-12 Championship vs. USC.

The Notre Dame game will be big on a national scale, but for the Cardinal, it’s about taking down the conference title and getting to a New Year’s Six bowl, likely the Fiesta.

It’s also big for Bryce Love, who might not be able to do enough to pass Baker Mayfield for the Heisman, but he’s strong enough to finish second by closing strong.

One Reason Why California Will Win

Much, much easier said than done, but if the Bear defense can at least slow down Love, it should be fine.

Stanford still doesn’t have much of a passing game.

It was okay against Washington, but that’s because everyone was trying to stop No. 20, and K.J. Costello had a slew of easy midrange throws to connect.

Stanford threw for four touchdowns against Oregon, but it hasn’t thrown more than one scoring pass in any of the other last six games. As good as Love is, if that ankle funks up on him again and he’s out for a stretch, the Cardinal O will hit the skids in a hurry.

One Reason Why Stanford Will Win

“Dr. Love,” as the Heisman promotion goes, is coming off an inspiring performance against Washington, running 30 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns on a bad ankle.

He’s still not 100%, and he’s obviously going to be keyed on, but as he proved against the Huskies, even at around 75%, he’s still among the best players on the field.

The California run defense has had its moments, but the stats are only kind when the opponents are throwing the ball. The Bears couldn’t stop Khalil Tate and Arizona, couldn’t handle the Oregon ground game, and now it has to deal with Love.

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford isn’t going to blow this. It’s got a whole slew of problems, and it’s hardly the team it was a few years ago when it was a regular in the Pac-12 Championship, but it’s on the doorstep of playing for the title again – with a little help.

The Cal offense might be rocking over the last month, but it’ll have a problem against a cranked up Stanford D that will dominated the mediocre Bear offensive front.

Love will run just well enough in bursts for the offense to take over, and even though the home field advantage isn’t really a thing in this, Cal making the trip down the road will matter a wee bit.
