Rivalry Week Final Thoughts & Investment Advice: Friday
First off all, because I have to – or else you’ll think I’m a bigger jerkweed than I actually am – Happy Thanksgiving.
No, really. I mean it. Enjoy the time off from the world for a moment.
Don’t turn on any political channels. Don’t talk to the family members who watch the new network you don’t. Stay away from anything that doesn’t involve butter, a nap, football, or all of the above at the same time.
But for those of you who still think of a big college football weekend as Christmas – especially on a day when the world loses its mind and goes shopping for stuff in a desperate attempt for love – get ready to open your presents.
For all the Friday games – the Saturday piece will be up Friday, this is all just for spits, giggles, and entertainment purposes only. However, just in case you dabble …
Ohhhh, no you don’t Egg Bowl. I liked you a whole lot better when you were giving Ole Miss a lot more points. But okay. If I loved you at 17, liked you at 16, I can handle being just friends at the 14.5.
I like Mississippi State to win, but this is the Rebels’ final game of the year before a whole new era kicks in next season. They’re going to bomb away in a fun loss. | Ole Miss vs. MSU Preview
The Tuesday night MAC games freaked me out. I usually have a strong handle on weeknight MACtion, but going 0-3 ATS – but getting all three teams right straight up – is making me question just how much the bad teams want to play. But the MAC Friday games matter.
For good or bad, Toledo and Northern Illinois are playing at around the same time. Toledo is in the MAC title game against Akron with a win over Western Michigan. The Rockets might play at an extra gear with the championship game there on the table, but WMU will be a lot pluckier than the Rockets might like. | WMU vs. Toledo Preview
Meanwhile, Northern Illinois will be scoreboard watching. If Toledo loses, and NIU wins, NIU is off to face Akron for the MAC title. Either way, Central Michigan will take care of business for the Rockets. At home, the Chippewa defense will match the NIU D with a terrific performance. | CMU vs. NIU Preview
And then there’s Ohio and Buffalo. The Bulls need this to go bowling, Ohio blew its shot at the East title by gagging against Akron, go with the home team looking to keep its season alive. | Buffalo vs. Ohio Game Preview
If you’re Alabama, or Ohio State, you really, really want Miami to lose to Pitt. But here’s one big problem – it’s going to be relatively warm. It’ll be a balmy 52 and sunny in Heinz Field, all but negating the late November weather factor.
Even so, with nothing to play for but pride, watch out for the mega-underdog at home. I’m not nearly as confident as I was in Virginia covering last week, but I’m scared to death of the quirky early Friday start time. Something about this just feels really, really, really dangerous. | Pitt vs. Miami Preview
In the category of I … Need … Sleep, I know it’s the end of the season and I desperately need to unplug when the extra half point in the TCU-Baylor game bothers me. The Horned Frog D will pitch a gem at home in an early start. Get ready to see a team that not only wants another crack at Oklahoma for the Big 12 title, it wants to be in the mix for the College Football Playoff. | TCU vs. Baylor Preview
No, really. I’m asking. Do you have a handle on Navy? The team just isn’t that great compared to past Midshipmen squads, and then it came out and gave Notre Dame fits.
No, really, do you have a handle on Houston? This team is the flakiest of the flaky, too.
So in a weird game like this, I’m going next-level silly I hate, hate, hate taking the underdog to lose but cover when the spread is under seven, but this should be a relatively tight game. | Navy vs. Houston Preview
It took the entire season for me to figure out that Arkansas was never, ever, ever going to play up to its potential, especially ATS. I had the Hogs covering the 11 at home in the final game of the year – and maybe the Bret Bielema era – but losing by ten. Now the spread is at 9.5. Do with that what you will. | Arkansas vs. Missouri Preview
Speaking of which, when it comes to ten point spreads, I had USF covering the 11 against UCF in the showdown – picking the Knights to win by ten. Now the line is at ten. What does that mean? Go with UCF. As I painfully learned last week, never, ever, ever go against UCF this season. | UCF vs. USF Preview
I want you to listen to me very, very carefully. Consider this the equivalent of thinking you’re getting a boring old Thanksgiving dinner, and instead, mom goes large with a bucket of KFC. This pick is that good.
San Diego State has nothing to play for other than getting RB Rashaad Penny 176 yards to get to 2,000. New Mexico’s run defense just got destroyed by UNLV. Aztecs, -20, gravy. Use a spork.
Oh, and by the way. That point total is like getting a free extra biscuit. The Aztecs might hit 48 all by themselves. | SDSU vs. New Mexico Preview
Troy is playing to stay in the Sun Belt title chase, leading to the showdown at Arkansas State next week. Texas State is playing its last game of the season and should keep this from getting out of hand, but the Trojans need this without any drama. | Troy vs. Texas State Preview
Nebraska. Home dog. Last game of the Mike Riley era – most likely. Outright vs. a Iowa team that’s played like a dog since that Ohio State win … A DOG. This Husker team is still playing hard, even if the defense is miserable. | Nebraska vs. Iowa Preview
Western Kentucky does a whole lot of things very, very wrong. But it can throw the ball better than anyone in Conference USA this year, and that’ll be enough on the road vs. FIU. | WKU vs. FIU Preview
Did Virginia play out of its butt against Miami? Is that all it has left in the tank before a bowl game? Nah. This Virginia Tech team is okay, not amazing, but it should win in a tight, low-scoring battle. If you’re going to go under the 50, I won’t hold you back. | VT vs. UVa Preview
Speaking of unders, that 55 in the Texas Tech-Texas game seems a wee bit top-heavy considering the Red Raider offense has an allergy to 1) imitation cranberry sauce and 2) defenses that don’t suck. Texas is quietly having a fantastic defensive season. | Texas vs. TT Preview
And Finally …
Wouldn’t it be so, so, so UCLA to win this thing against Cal with ease and go bowling now that Jim Mora is gone and Jedd Fisch is in?
It’ll be fascinating late night viewing with the winner getting a 13th game, the loser done for the year, and with Josh Rosen throwing for 837 yards against mediocre Cal D.
Hate the seven, like the over 64, love that UCLA is 5-0 in the Rose Bowl, 0-6 on the road, and this is in Pasadena. | UCLA vs. Cal Preview
