Oklahoma is a whole lot of things but it’s certainly not boring.
The Sooners don’t have much of a defense, and they’ve played in several tight battles, but they’ve also shown enough firepower to keep up even the most epic of fights – like last week’s 62-52 shootout with Oklahoma State.
Deep in the College Football Playoff hunt, OU can all but secure a spot in the Big 12 Championship with a win – let’s just assume a win at Kansas next week – but there’s bigger fish to fry. Win this, merely show up against the Jayhawks, take care of West Virginia at home, and then it’s on to the title game with a reasonable shot at the CFP.
The same goes for TCU.
Like OU, TCU also slipped against Iowa State, but that’s been the only slight blip. The defense continues to be amazing – allowing just 27 points over the last month – with little to no drama over the course of the season other than the issues in the red zone in Ames, of course.
This might be the first of two meetings. With both teams already taking care of Oklahoma State, TCU is probably in no matter what with a trip to Texas Tech and a date with Baylor to close.
One Reason Why Oklahoma Will Win
Baker Mayfield keeps on being Baker Mayfield.
The Heisman is his for the taking – mostly because there’s no one else – but he has to keep winning, and he has to keep on putting up ridiculous numbers.
He’s not going to throw for 598 yards and five touchdowns against the Horned Frogs, but he keeps proving time and again that he’s able to come through in the clutch, answering the call late against Kansas State and Texas.
Yeah, he almost blew it against the Cowboys with a bad late pick, but the team won, and the rest of his day overcame the whiff.
As good as the Horned Frog secondary is, it can be thrown on, giving up 398 yards to Mason Rudolph and Oklahoma State, 366 to Will Grier and West Virginia, and 200 yards or more in five of the last seven games.
One Reason Why TCU Will Win
No, TCU isn’t quite as equipped to keep up in a shootout like OU is, but it’s job is to not get there in the first place.
Why are the Horned Frogs so solid and why do so many of their games seem so – for lack of a better word – easy?
Third downs, third downs, third downs.
The Horned Frogs hit half of their third down conversion tries – they’re sixth in the nation – seemingly always coming through in the big moments. The one time they struggled? Iowa State, and that was the loss.
Oklahoma’s defense is a disaster on third downs, allowing 40% or more conversions in five of the last six games.
What’s Going To Happen
The Big 12 anomaly, TCU has a defense, and it’s about to show it off.
The Horned Frogs will win by keeping Mayfield off the field for long stretches. Yes, Mayfield and the passing game are amazing, but the terrific ground game provides the cake base for the frosting.
TCU is No. 1 in the nation against the run, and it’s about to pitch a defensive gem. But Oklahoma will get its shot at redemption in a few weeks in the Big 12 Championship rematch.
