The Big 12 race is hardly over.

Oklahoma State lost to the two leaders – Oklahoma and Iowa State – but one of them will lose this weekend, and there’s still hope to win out, catch a break, and get a rematch against one of the two in Big 12 Championship.

Iowa State is in an even better spot. It beat the two big boys, and while it doesn’t totally control its own Big 12 title destiny, it’s close. Win out against Oklahoma State, at Baylor and at Kansas State, and hope for a West Virginia loss along the way – the Mountaineers have to go to Oklahoma – and boom. In.

The Cyclone offense has stalled, scoring just 30 points over the last two games, and now it needs to rise up in a hurry against a Cowboy attack that has the machine cranked up, but it wasn’t enough to get by Baker Mayfield and the Sooners.

One Reason Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Lost in Baker Mayfield’s rise in the Heisman race is the continued excellence of Mason Rudolph.

While there were too many misfires against OU and TCU, and those happened to be the two games he threw two picks, he also threw for 376 yards against the Horned Frogs and hit the Sooners for 448 yards.

Last year against the Cyclones? 351 yards and four scores in the 38-31 win, and went for 327 yards and a score in the 35-31 win two years ago.

He’s humming, Justice Hill is coming off a 228-yard rushing day, and everything is working. Even with a banged up James Washington, the Cowboy offense should have too much pop and power for the Cyclones.

One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win

The Cyclones have to own the turnover margin. They have good skill talent, and the defense has been solid in key stretches, but the season has been made or broken on turnovers and being on the right side of the mistakes game.

It’s just this simple. Iowa State is 6-0 when it’s on the plus side of the turnover margin, and 0-3 when it’s not, going -1 against both Iowa and Texas, and playing West Virginia even.

The Cyclones were a +12 in the wins, and now they’re dealing with a Cowboy team that’s dead even on the season. When Oklahoma State is on the wrong side of the turnover margin? 0-2.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State plays at a whole other level at home, but it’s about to deal with a sharp offense that can do a little of everything right.

The Cyclones – who haven’t lost a fumble – have to be perfect, and they have to own third downs and keep Rudolph off the field, and they won’t.

OSU will be too good offensively, keeping the pressure on all game long. Rudolph will be fantastic.
