And now Ohio State has to keep it all going.
At this point, even at No. 6 in the first College Football Playoff rankings, the Buckeyes are okay as long as they just keep winning. After taking down Penn State, it’s this simple. Beat Iowa, Michigan State, Illinois and Michigan, and it’s off to the Big Ten championship with a shot at the CFP.
Iowa is going to have to work just to go bowling, with a trip to Wisconsin next week, a date at Nebraska to close things out, and with Purdue in between.
But beating OSU would make the season.
Iowa almost pulled it off against Penn State early this year, it stunned Michigan last year, and now it can ruin OSU’s season.
One Reason Why Ohio State Will Win
The Iowa offense has stopped doing good things.
The running game hasn’t been there for most of the season, and scoring points at times has been like pulling teeth, failing to score 20 in four of the last five games.
Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, they’re going to have to put up points in bunches to offset one of the hottest players in college football.
J.T. Barrett was brilliant in the win over Penn State, completing 33-of-39 passes for 328 yards and four scores, and running for a team-high 95 yards. All he has to do is not make big mistakes.
Let the running game work, let the defensive line crush the Iowa backfield, and put up a few early points, and make Iowa try to come back. If Barrett is on, and the D forces plenty of third downs, there shouldn’t be any drama.
One Reason Why Iowa Will Win
How does Iowa do this? How can it hang around without the firepower on offense to keep up any sort of pace?
The defense just has to keep getting off the field.
There isn’t a killer pass rush, and there isn’t a whole lot of flash, but the defense is fantastic at coming up with the third down stop when it really, really needs to.
Okay, except for the late drives by Penn State, but even in that game the defense stayed in the game by doing a great job time and again in big spots. Over the last two weeks, Iowa allowed both Northwestern and Minnesota to convert just four of 16 third down tries.
Limit the explosive plays, somehow get Barrett off his rhythm, and slowwwwwww things down to a stop. The Buckeyes will want to go fast – Iowa has to dominate the time of possession to keep the D fresh.
What’s Going To Happen
Iowa will come out jacked up, and Ohio State will sputter. But the Buckeyes will strike fast, and that will be it.
The Buckeyes are great at not panicking. It’s a long game, and it showed against Indiana and Penn State that eventually the offense will work. Against Iowa, it just might take a quarter to get going.
