Where does Notre Dame go from here?
The Fighting Irish have a path to the College Football Playoff if everyone but Miami and Georgia melts down, but realistically, the goal now is to get to a New Year’s Six bowl game and make something amazing out of the rest of the season.
For some bizarre reason, the Irish came out throwing against a Miami team that’s historically amazing at picking off passes, and they paid for it in the 41-8 loss that ruined the dream. But now they have the regular season home finale to get up for, and then the trip to Stanford to deal with.
The Midshipmen are coming off a nice win over SMU, but they struggled over a three-game losing stretch with QB Zach Abey hurting and the defense starting to struggle.
Can Notre Dame deal with the option attack? Can it get up for a game again after getting destroyed like it did in the Hard Rock? Navy is always dangerous, and the Irish need their heads in it.
One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win
The Irish run defense has struggled over the last two weeks – giving up over 200 yards for the first time all season against both Wake Forest and Miami – but the defensive front really is good enough to keep the Navy option attack in check, especially when it tries to go to the outside.
But the real key is the ground game that should get back in a groove again.
The Irish were destroying everyone for 300 yards a game just about every time out, but they weren’t able to get going against Georgia, Michigan State, or last week against Miami – but they didn’t exactly come out committing to the ground game against the Canes.
There’s no need to get too quirky with this against the Midshipmen run defense that couldn’t handle the Air Force option attack and gets pounded on by teams that start running and keep running.
This isn’t the killer Navy D of previous seasons – it’ll give up big yards, especially on third downs. The Irish should be able to take control of the game from the start. But …
One Reason Why Navy Will Win
Just when it seemed like the running game was in trouble with Abey ailing … kaboom.
559 yards and six touchdowns against SMU.
It might not be quite the killer it was in past seasons, but the Navy option attack can still hang 400 yards on the board on just about anyone on the right day. Notre Dame might have the linebackers to figure the thing out – this is a better defensive front than the one that got hit for 320 yards in last years’ 28-27 win – but it’s still has to deal with the precision a week after the Miami debacle.
As always with Navy, it’s all about time of possession and controlling the clock and the tempo. Notre Dame hits a lot of home runs – owning the clock doesn’t always matter – but the Midshipmen have to try grinding out drives to save the pedestrian D.
No. 1 in the nation in time of possession, Navy has to hold on to the ball for at least 36 minutes.
What’s Going To Happen
Notre Dame will bounce back. The Navy running game will do what it can to control the tempo, but the Irish won’t forget about their own ground attack this week. They’ll hit the big runs early and get out to a hot start, forcing Navy to play catchup all game long.
This isn’t a Midshipman team built to play catchup all game long.
