The cake is already baked.
NC State lost three of its last four games, but the losses to Clemson and Wake Forest ended the ACC title dream, even with the wins over FSU and Louisville earlier in the year.
It’s been a successful season for the Wolfpack, but they haven’t been quite as great as they were supposed to be. They’re at least going bowling.
This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for North Carolina. It wasn’t supposed to be 3-8 rebuilding, but it wasn’t expected to be anything amazing.
Winners of two straight, the Tar Heels have pulled up out of the nosedive – at least a little bit. It might be a token victory, but after losing to Duke earlier in the year, taking down one of the rivals will help ease the pain.
One Reason Why North Carolina Will Win
So how has everything gone right over the last two weeks? Playing Western Carolina is a big part of it, but the play of QB Nathan Elliott has been the difference.
He stepped up at Pitt, and came up big against the Catamounts, hitting over 64% of his throws over the last two weeks for 475 yards and six touchdowns with no picks.
A baller, he’s provided the spark the team needed to get out of the offensive doldrums. UNC didn’t score more than 20 points over six game stretch – all losses – but the O perked up. However …
One Reason Why NC State Will Win
The NC State defensive front might have something to say about all of this.
Embarrassed by the Irish, Clemson and BC ground games over a three week stretch, it did a nice job against Wake Forest last week, but it still couldn’t quite get the job done in a loss.
The Wolfpack will make play after play in the backfield, they should be far stronger against the run than they showed for that ugly stretch, and they’ll attack Mr. Elliott from the start.
Already awful on third downs, UNC isn’t going to do much to move the chains.
What’s Going To Happen
North Carolina will continue to be plucky.
It’s not that NC State has been bad, but the tough losses might lead to a demoralized team that needs needs to have an easy outing again.
The State doesn’t seem to do anything all that easy.
In a rivalry game – and the final game of the year – UNC will have its moments, but it just won’t have the ball. NC State will control the clock for almost 35 minutes – the Tar Heels won’t have enough chances.
