Missouri’s going bowling? Really?

The Tigers couldn’t play dead for the first half of the season – really, who loses 35-3 to Purdue? – and then came the Idaho and UConn sympathy wins.

Whatever – those were supposed to be no big whoop. But they jarred something loose. Now the offense is unstoppable, the defense decided to show up, and now the team that looked like it was going to undergo a total overhaul needs a win on the road against Vandy or Arkansas to get a 13th game.

On the opposite side is Vanderbilt, who looked so dangerous and nasty over the first three games, and then crashed in an ugly run of six losses in the last seven games.

But life isn’t over. Beat Missouri and get by Tennessee, and the narrative changes with bowl eligibility.

One Reason Why Missouri Will Win

Drew Lock and the passing game have been outstanding during the recent run, but last week against Tennessee, it was the ground game that took off and started to rock.

Ish Witter ran for 216 yards averaging nine yards per pop, and freshman Larry Rountree was amazing with 155 yards and a score after rushing for three touchdowns against Florida.

Humming on all cylinders, the offense is balanced and explosive. On the flip side is Vanderbilt, with the nation’s fourth-worst running game averaging under 100 yards per came. The Commodore O line has been fine in pass protection, but it can’t do anything to get going on the ground.

Against a defensive front that leads the SEC in tackles for loss, the production won’t be there this week, either.

One Reason Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Again, for all the problems getting things going, Vandy’s O line has been outstanding at keeping the quarterbacks upright.

Kyle Shurmur and the passing game are working, rolling for 300 yards in two of the last three games with 333 yards and four scores in the South Carolina loss, and 308 yards last week. However, he gave up four picks against the Wildcats in the loss.

It hasn’t been a consistent run for Shurmur, but he’s shown the skills to bomb away and keep the offense moving. If this gets into a firefight, given time to work, Shurmur should be able to keep up.

What’s Going To Happen

Vandy will be fired up defensively in the home finale, but that will only last for a little bit. The Mizzou offense is too hot and too effective right now, with the line playing too well.

As solid as Vandy might be throwing the ball, there’s just no ground game to balance things out. There won’t be any time to get things going. After the first quarter, Missouri’s O will roll.
