Is there anything else Bret Bielema can do to save his job?
Athletic Director Jeff Long is gone, and now the program might be looking in a new direction as soon as possible – even with Bielema’s buyout.
After a mediocre era, going 4-7 just doesn’t work. 5-7 won’t look much better, but if the Hogs play like they did in the 28-21 loss to Mississippi State, they have a shot to close strong.
But Missouri is on fire, turning around a dead season with five straight wins thanks to an offense that’s hanging up 45 points or more every week. They don’t need this now after getting bowl eligible last week with the 45-17 win over Vanderbilt, but it would be nice to close strong.
One Reason Why Arkansas Will Win
It hasn’t worked over the second half of the season, but if this is the last game of the Bielema era, wouldn’t it be fitting to do things exactly like they were supposed to work?
Run the ball, control the clock for almost 35 minutes, and do whatever it takes to keep the Mizzou offense off the field.
The Tigers might be cranking up the massive numbers and putting up points in a hurry, but they’re also dead last in the country in time of possession.
There’s a chance Arkansas has the ball for 40 minutes. But it has to score when it has those chances.
One Reason Why Missouri Will Win
Drew Lock is in a groove.
He’s getting the ball out of his hands in a hurry, and he’s figured out how to get this offense going with the chains moving. He might have an accuracy issue – he’s only hit 43% of his passes against Tennessee and Vanderbilt – but he threw seven touchdown passes.
Now he’s bombing away with 21 touchdowns and three picks during the winning streak, and Arkansas doesn’t have the talent to stop the machine.
Over the last three games against Coastal Carolina, LSU and Mississippi State – none of them exactly have Tom Brady under center slinging it – the Hogs have allowed seven touchdown passes and no picks.
What’s Going To Happen
Lock will keep everything going. Arkansas will come out fired up in its last game of the season, but it won’t matter.
The Tiger offense will have decent balance with Ish Witter taking the pressure off of Lock, but it’ll be the Tiger passing game that takes over in the second quarter.
It’ll be a firefight, but Mizzou is better equipped for it.
