Maryland is just flaky enough to pull this off.
The team without a quarterback – really, the quarterback cupboard is almost bare – was good enough to beat Texas and slip by Minnesota and Indiana, but lose to Rutgers.
There’s still a desperate bowl hope for the Terps, but they have to win two of the last three against Michigan, at Michigan State and Penn State.
Just surviving without any major injuries would be good enough.
Michigan keeps on getting ignored by the College Football Playoff committee. It doesn’t really matter – the Wolverines aren’t going to the College Football Playoff – however, there’s still a shot at getting a New Year’s Six bowl game for the second year in a row by going 10-2 with wins over Wisconsin and Ohio State to close.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
Michigan still has to prove it can throw a little bit.
For all of Maryland’s issues, the defense makes up for problems by taking the ball, and the O leads the Big Ten in the fewest turnovers. The team is well-coached, and it’s trying to do everything right – it’s just hurt.
Michigan didn’t have to throw to beat Rutgers or Minnesota, but at some point, Brandon Peters is going to have to unleash it a bit. It’s up to Maryland to load up against the run and test the Wolverines to make them throw deep.
Peters has been accurate, but the Michigan passing game hasn’t hit the 200-yard mark in any of the last five games and has just six touchdown passes on the year.
Last week against the Gophers? 8-of-13 for 56 yards and a touchdown. But …
One Reason Why Michigan Will Win
The ground attack has been dominant.
How do you get over a mediocre passing game with a new quarterback? You pound, pound, pound away.
The Wolverines ripped up Rutgers for 334 yards and Minnesota for 371, grinding it out when needed, and hitting its share of home runs, too.
Junior Karan Higdon ran for his second 200-yard day in the last four games, rolling by the Gophers for 200 yards and two scores with eight touchdowns now in the last four dates.
Run the ball, rely on the defense, and make Maryland throw. This should be easy because …
What’s Going To Happen
Tyrrell Pigrome started the season for the Terps, but he got knocked out against Texas. Superstar recruit Kasim Hill was great, and then he suffered a knee injury. Caleb Henderson got a throw, but it was Max Bortenschlager who stepped into the void. He was okay, but he got hurt against Rutgers and now is questionable.
Enter Ryan Brand, who runs better than Bortenschlager and is a better fit for the attack, He hit 8-of-12 short throws last week and …
Welcome to the Michigan defense.
The Wolverine D will shut the Terps down, Higdon will come up with another solid day, Peters won’t screw up, and it’ll be off to Madison.
