There’s still a funky shot of Michigan State going to the Big Ten Championship, but it would start with Ohio State losing to Illinois – Michigan State isn’t playing in the Big Ten Championship.
Even so, it’s been a solid bounceback season after the 2016 disaster. With winnable games against Maryland and Rutgers to close things out, win the last two, take down the bowl game, and it’ll be a terrific ten-win campaign.
Maryland has to not only beat the Spartans, but Penn State next week as well to get bowl eligible.
Quarterback injuries killed the promise and potential of a 3-1 start – winning just one game over the last six.
The effort is still there, but the offense just doesn’t have enough pop and the defense can’t shut anyone down.
Will the Spartans be a bit lethargic after the ugly blowout loss at Ohio State last week? It’s the final home game of the year and Senior Day, but they can’t mail this in.
One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win
It’ll seem like Maryland never, ever has the ball.
The biggest problem from all the quarterbacking issues is the Terps’ total inability to keep the chains moving. Last in the Big Ten in third down possession, and last in third down conversion D, they’re not giving themselves any breaks.
Michigan State might not be able to grind it out like it did with past tough guy teams, but it’s terrific at owning the clock, ranking fourth in the nation in time of possession. Be shocked if there isn’t at least a 35-25 split – Maryland just won’t have the ball enough to do anything.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
Michigan State has a really, really big fumbling problem.
Uncharacteristically, the Spartans have a turnover issue with 18 on the year. While the defense does a good job at making up for the problems, the O has given it up two times or more six times.
Maryland is second in the Big Ten in turnover margin. To make up for the lackluster offense, the Terps have to be a +2 – at a minimum – taking advantage of every opportunity.
It would be nice, though, if the running game rolled. Lorenzo Harrison and Ty Johnson bring a solid 1-2 punch, but …
What’s Going To Happen
Down to a fourth-string quarterback, Maryland just has to hope Ryan Brand can be more than just a runner.
It’s going to take a whole slew of Michigan State meltdowns for the Terps to pull this off, and they’re not going to get them.
Spartan QB Brian Lewerke will get back on track after struggling against Ohio State, the jacked up D will close down third down after third down, and it’ll be a relatively nice and easy day coming off the disaster in Columbus.
