Watch … out.

And now it’s really on.

Miami was good, and it came up with a few clutch wins, but there wasn’t anything to get too excited about. And then came the 41-8 stomping of Notre Dame, and now it’s College Football Playoff or bust for the program that’s been dying to get back among the elite.

Breaking barriers, it’s going to the ACC Championship for the first time, getting to the point where some are thinking it might be in even if it loses to Clemson – as long as it beats Virginia and Pitt, first.

And that might just be more of a problem than it appears.

Pitt is awful, but it’s a road game to Pittsburgh in potentially cold weather in late November. The Panthers are going to pull out all the stops with nothing to lose, just like Virginia will.

It’s a morning game against a team playing with house money.

Virginia is already bowl eligible and can turn it loose with all the pressure on the other side of the field.

Again, just … watch out.

One Reason Why Virginia Will Win

Miami’s secondary has been absolutely ridiculous when it comes to taking the ball away, but it hasn’t faced a whole slew of decent passers. The Canes played just two games against teams that can really throw: Toledo and Syracuse.

Logan Woodside and the Rockets rolled for 344 yards and three scores with no picks, and while Syracuse and Eric Dungey threw four picks and no touchdown passes, it was still a close 27-19 battle.

Virginia QB Kurt Benkert will throw a pick here and there – giving up one in each of the last four games and seven on the year – and there’s nothing happening deep, but this offense can kill by a 1,000 small cuts.

Benkert can dink and dunk all game long, even if he’s not always accurate. If he’s on, the Canes – coming off the hangover from the Notre Dame game – could be have problems.

One Reason Why Miami Will Win

Oh yeah, the takeaways.

The offense can’t keep things moving, there isn’t enough pop, and there are a whole slew of issues being masked by big plays from the defense, but Miami never, ever is on the wrong side of the turnover battle.

The win over Toledo was the only time the Canes were even, going a ridiculous +15 on the year. Come up with picks against teams like Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, convert them into points, feed off the energy.

Game over.

Virginia will turn it over at least twice to a defense that’s come up with four takeaways in each of the last four games. Even if the other parts aren’t working, Miami will force the errors.

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s Miami’s problem. The offense just isn’t very good.

It can’t convert on third downs – it’s last in the ACC – and Virginia is strong defensively at getting off the field.

The Canes will pull this off, but it’s going to be a massive struggle to get this over with. Virginia is going to hang on to the ball for well over 35 minutes, Miami will struggle to move the ball, and it’ll be a dogfight for four quarters.

However, Miami will stay alive because Virginia will be ultra-conservative doing everything possible to not turn the ball over. It’ll be enough to make this a fight, but it won’t be able to put it away.

Once again, Malik Rosier will come through late.
