Was that just a scare, or was that an indication that Miami might not be quite as good as it looked or played against Notre Dame?
The Hurricanes had to mount a massive comeback against Virginia to overcome a rough first half, but they still cranked up a 44-28 win to keep everything going in a breakthrough season.
Now they’re two steps away from getting into the College Football Playoff. Win this one, though, and there will be some talk about the Canes being in as long as they don’t wet the bed against Clemson in the ACC Championship.
And that’s where Pitt comes in.
The Panthers lost two straight to North Carolina (not okay) and Virginia Tech (fine, it was a fight) to get knocked out of bowl eligibility, but bowl game, schmowl game.
This is bigger than any post-season game the Panthers can get to.
Can they turn it loose and make their season with a win? It’s a different year, different programs, and a very different time, but a 4-7 2007 Pitt team was supposed to be a speed bump for a West Virginia that needed a win to go off to the BCS Championship.
The Panthers won 13-9.
Now it’s up to the 2017 version to ruin Miami’s hopes.
One Reason Why Miami Will Win
There’s playing with confidence, there’s going on a run, and there’s what the Miami defense is doing, comping up with a ridiculous 19 takeaways in the last five games, and with 27 on the year.
Yeah, the turnover chain is cute and all, but it all means something bigger. The team feeds off of the momentum swings, even when the D isn’t taking the picks to the house.
Virginia was really, really careful last week, but it took just one interception to change everything around. Miami has yet to lose the turnover battle – going a +16 on the season – and while the Panthers aren’t awful when it comes to making mistakes, they’re -2 over the last six games.
Again, all it takes is one big mistake.
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
46 degrees and sunny. That’s the expected weather in Pittsburgh, while the expected temperature in Miami is supposed to be around 80.
Miami has played five of its last six games at home, six of its last seven in Florida, and this is just the fourth road game of the season. This is going to be the coldest game this team has played in by a mile.
Can the Pitt D rise up and get off the field? Miami’s offense played better against Virginia as the game went on, but it’s still among the worst in the ACC in third down conversions.
The Panther defense has to make plays on key downs, the offense has to not screw up, and it’s going to take a special performance from Darrin Hall and the running game to take over.
What’s Going To Happen
It’ll take a half to Miami to get going.
Pitt will come out fired up with absolutely nothing to lose, and the Canes will have problems early on in the cold weather. The Pitt defense that blew out Virginia 31-14 will keep the mediocre Miami offense under wraps …
And then the mistakes will come.
The Panthers won’t be able to handle the dialed up Miami pass rush, the turnovers will follow, and the second half run will happen to get the Canes to the ACC Championship unbeaten.
