Syracuse is huge part of the College Football Playoff picture, but for a bad reason.

It managed to beat Clemson, but if it manages to lose either one of its last two games against Louisville or Boston College, it’ll also be out of the bowl picture.

In the College Football Playoff era, only 2015 Michigan State’s loss to Nebraska – who finished 6-7 after getting a break to go bowling – would be close to as bad as Clemson’s loss in the Carrier Dome.

Coming off a 64-43 firefight loss to Wake Forest, the Orange have lost three straight since the big win over the Tigers.

Louisville also lost in a shootout with Wake Forest, but it managed to get by Virginia last week to become bowl eligible. Now it’s fun time, with the regular season finale at home against the Orange, and then the showdown against Kentucky for in-state supremacy.

One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win

It might not seem right considering all the problems the defense had against the Demon Deacons last week, and considering all the problems giving up big pass plays, but Syracuse is shockingly fantastic on third downs.

The Orange are No. 1 in the ACC and third in the nation in third down D, allowing teams to convert just 25% of the time.

How do you slow down Lamar Jackson? Lots of plays behind the line, a decent run defense and … Syracuse doesn’t do or have that. But it is able to bomb away with anyone, throwing for 314 yards against Florida State and hitting Wake Forest for 443 yards and three scores.

Louisville’s secondary has been erratic – to be kind. It’s the second-worst in the ACC against the pass, allowing 255 yards per game, and now it’s about to get bombed on. But …

One Reason Why Louisville Will Win

Thanks to Mr. Jackson, Louisville has the best offense in the ACC – it’s fourth in the nation – cranking out 544 yards per game.

Jackson continues to make up for all the other issues, tearing off his fourth 100-yard rushing game in a row last week to go along with three touchdown passes against Virginia.

Last year against Syracuse? 411 passing yards and a score with 199 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the 62-28 win.

Is this his final home game for the Cardinals? Either way, he’ll put on a show.

What’s Going To Happen

The Louisville defense might not be anything great, but at least it comes up with takeaways.

It’ll be a wild firefight with all of the parts coming up with big plays, big yards, and lots of offense.

Eric Dungey is still a question mark after missing the Wake Forest game banged up, but Zack Mahoney – two picks and all – showed he could bomb away when needed. No matter who’s at quarterback, there won’t be an answer for Jackson.
